I know Alis status as the greatest heavyweight of all times is an established truth, and that suggesting anything else is blasphemy. But considering the controversy around some of Alis wins, and the fact that the sport was less professional those days (even letting a one eyed man fight), are there not a questionmark or two? Lewis has clear signature wins over other ATG's like Tyson and Holyfield, and he is the only one ever to hand the abnormal Klitschko brothers a loss without getting his ass kicked afterwards :bbb Discuss!
Ridiculous. Ali has wins over 3 potential top 10 Heavyweights, Foreman and Frazier both near prime, Liston a big favourite. Tyson was a shell, and Holyfield was a decent win, but past his best.
Looking forward to reading twenty plus pages from ******ed Brits...as if there were any other type of Brit
Lewis got Tyson's name on his record the same way Calzaghe eventually got RJJ's, they caught them at a time were they were simply names rather than fighters. H2H I favour Lewis over the majority of HW greats, but he won't be ranked highter than Ali because of a few reasons. 1. Cassius Clay was a genius, the most elusive heavyweight I can re-call (closesly followed by a prime Tyson) the mans footwork was so good, people say the best fight was the Cleavelend Williams one, but forget that he'd been shot in the leg a few months before that and wasn't a very mobile fighter by that point, Cassius Clays best performance is the first fight with Liston. 2. Muhammed Ali, When he came back from his exile, Ali didn't have the legs he once had, so he changed his style, his win over George Foreman was brilliant, the perfect tactical plan and the only conceivable way he'd of ever won the fight, Lewis style was taylored around his size and reach, he never had to contend with a loss of legs and reflexes. 3. People attribute most of Ali's losses to him being past his prime (that being said, I don't think he'd ever of beaten the Frazier he fought the first time, Joe would of died in that ring to beat Ali.) Lewis has two KO defeats during his prime, which although he avenged, he really should of been able to avoid. 4. It's Muhammed Ali! People are always going to look at him through Rose tinted glasses, it's just the way it is.
In answer to the thread...it's very close. But no. Rahman was a very very dangerous boxer in his prime, and while McCall was an underachiever it's not at all to be underestimated that he had Manny Steward in his corner, and that is essentially why he won that fight.
Ali was a boxing genius. He never fought the same fight against anyone. His style was tailor made to fight and beat anyone he fought, and a prime Ali is probably undefeated H2H vs ANY fighter, ANY era. He's the only fighter, IMO, who could cross over into ANY generation and dominate it. The same can not be said for Lewis. He fought the best that would fight him, except Sanders, and beat everyone he ever fought. Frazier is a JOKE, but Ali knew how to beat that joke, and made it happen. But Lewis would KO Frazier worse than a young Foreman did, and sent Joe back to the AMs. PERIOD:deal
I suppose you aswell rank Rocky Balboa above Ali........ I mean Clubber, Apolo TWICE! one was very fishy....
Head to Head Lewis would decapitate Ali. Considering what they did for the sport and how much attention they grabbed... Ali takes this hands down, probably against any other HW as well.
Lewis did have the best wins after Ali out of anyone else in the modern HW scene though Holyfield (x2) Tyson Vitali Klitschko Briggs Tua Rahman Golata Tua
