It appears that simply saying something is amateur makes it amateur. They're being paid, and even the guys running WSB say its professional. Just listen to 1.40 on.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JetTnsEJ8Uo
Like all organisation apb boxing will grow and if they can keep building and building slowly but surely due to them having first option on amatuer boxers so to speak they will become a threat
quit trying to take away from what he just accomplished. its an amateur event (the world series of boxing)
Its an amateur event where the fighters get paid fight fees and basically fight professional rules. The people who run WSB refer to it as professional.
1) that guy is some marketing director for the German team not a AIBA representative 2) he says WSB is a stepping stone/feeder system to the pros, he's talking about AIBA's plans to start APB (AIBA Pro Boxing) which is what GMurphy was talking about.
He also says the fighters are professional and get paid fight fees, does he not? He even mentions the figure that is paid out in fight fees. Its a really tenuous argument to say "this group of paid boxers are amateur, whereas this group of paid boxers are professional." People here need to look up the definition of "amateur"
Ill make it very simple. You go to a fight and get paid for that fight specifically, you're a professional. Im not talking about government grants, Im talking about fighting specifically for pay, which is what the WSB is. At least before, you could differentiate as amateur boxing was a very different sport. Now that theres no headgear and fights are scored the same, there isnt even that difference. Paid to fight=professional. These are full time fighters. Even many olympians still hold down jobs, the guys in the WSB are full time, pro boxers.
The fact is, the WSB are identical to amateur boxing in every single way possible, the only difference is that WSB is 5 rounds. Getting paid for the fights doesn't change the fact that the fights themselves are clearly amateur + 2 more amateur rounds. You've just been pimp slapped left right and centre by Vysotsky and gmurphy. Seriously. This isn't a thread about the argumentation anymore, this is just a needy desperacy for you to be right. What's the point of discussion if this is what you are?
So...they get paid for the fight...and are amateur. Thats like saying some is tall....and is 4'9. They're paid for the fights. They full time boxers. The fights are scored the same as professional fights. The fight without a singlet or headgear. Sure...how could I not see how amateur they were....I feel silly now.
I didnt think I had to do this but. http://www.thefreedictionary.com/amateur http://www.thefreedictionary.com/professional
The point is, apparently, unbeknownst to me, someone has changed the definition of amateur in the middle of the night... Apparently being paid to engage in a specific sporting activity no longer is sufficient to call someone professional, even though that is the literal definition of what a professional sportsperson is.
http://www.aiba.org/en-US/WSB/WSB_Boxers.aspx Its actually a mixture of Professional and Amateur boxers-or can be by definition of the criteria that get paid yet can still compete in the Olympics (the effective carrot of the WSB as opposed to turning full time Pro). By definition of the Organisation its Amateur but geared towards a professional boxing setup, though not fully-round numbers etc. You can only fight against a selected pool in terms of quality though, no journeymen pros i dont think as the quality criteria would see them ruled out. So should these bouts count...its an Amateur organisation running a competition and the boxers sign 'Amateur' contracts so technically no they arent Pro bouts. They could be considered comparable to a pros early learning fights when just 'turned over to the pro game and certainly should be taken into account when assessing a fighters potential. WSB is above 'typical amateur' level but is below pro.
