Was Shogun much better at kickboxing than Jones? Jones is a Jackson fighter who gets better at everything every time he fights. Technical striking is all well and good but Jone's long reach, athleticism, and maybe comparably less technical striking has had nothing but fantastic effects so far. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if Jones' speed and reach had devastating consequences to Machida. That said his wrestling has proven to be absolutely top notch in the division as well. I would like to see Machida get another win before he fights Jones. Beating Couture at this stage of Couture's career doesn't seem like enough of an achievement coming off of two losses to warrant a title shot. Rampage deserves it more. Rashad deserves it more.
I think if he dominates Phil Davis he is rightfully the #1 contender (Rashad) , only bearing in mind that by having him and Machida fight off for the #1 slot would keep Jones too inactive . If Davis beats Rashad then Machida gets the shot , if Rashad beats Davis on a poor show / close fight , then Machida gets the shot (IMO he should , but we all know he wont) . All of the above said , Phil Davis is a real threat to anybody @205 if he applies a better game plan , i have a feeling his training camp is too limited for him to truly take that elite step " just yet " , that said once he starts to get the bigger fight purses he may flit between camps as a lot of the top fighters do these days to refine the seperate disciplines , i mean a month or two at Wand fight team couldnt possibly do Davis any harm !!!
I also think its fair to say of all the MMA champions in the world right now , its Jones who has shown the least flaws P4P , is he the best P4P fighter in the world ?? , i beleive he is , is his resume strong enough for that accollade right now ?? NO , therefore its a wait and see . My point being is that i see Machida as his only real threat @205 right now , i think he dominates everybody else @205 ........... As a fan id like The UFC to go ahead and just pencil in Jones Machida and tell Evans to get in line regardless of the outcome of Evans Davis
Fuuuuuuuuu Evans/Davis isn't until August. It all depends on how soon Bones is clear to fight. If Bones/Machida is to happen next, it will be announced by the end of the month. If Evans loses and Rampage wins, I see Rampage getting the title shot, and Machida/Davis for the next title shot. To be honest, Machida doesn't deserve a title shot next, just look at his last 3 fights.. So he knocks out a 47 year old who hasn't been relevant for a couple of years.. Big deal.
I think the thing most people don't realise when they analyse this matchup is that you can almost totally disregard Machidas stand up game. Bones is so good at taking guys down, from any situation, that he decides where the fight will take place. Machida may time Jones on the way in but there is absolutely no evidence whatsover to suggest that might occur, Jones crazy strikes from long range make it too difficult for fighters to predict/counter what is coming next. I actually think Evans is a tougher fight for jones as he is a better wrestler than Machida, although I have to say I don't see either guy giving him much trouble.
Machida has very good takedown defense and on the evidence of last Saturday has regained the speed and footwork that denied wrestlers such as Evans the angles they need to shoot in.
1. Machida looked quick against an old, pedestrian fighter. 2. Jones is not a wrestler such as Evans, he is in a different league to any other fighter I have ever seen when it comes to scoring a takedown. Plus he is so unpredictable, all the talk was about Ruas striking V Jones wrestling before the fight and what happens once the bell rings? Jones lands a flying knee in the first 5 seconds against arguably a better striker than Machida. Also when the fight is on the ground he looks to finish 100% of the time. He is just too big and too good in the crucial areas for any LHW IMO.
dont think so, beating hamill is more impressive than beating a 47 year old hormone user whos last 3 fights were against absolute cans
i think you forget that machida in 5 rounds is better than jones and jones was pretty gassed in the 2nd round against rua, plus machida is more elusive than jones and would be a match for jones standing up plus a crane kick to jones face would knock him the f*** out!!!
This. I was as impressed as anyone with the karate kid kick, but like it or not Machida lost to Rampage and to shogun before that. One more win against a top 10 and I'd be happy to see him against Jones.
