Should Maia call it a day?

Its hard to say, hes still one of the best middleweights in the world but hes not winning any titles soon or getting any younger. he could stick around for the bucks but looking at it through objective eyes id say hes gone as well as hes going to and would probably be wise to hang them up while hes still competitive and before someone gives him a serious flogging.

 

He doesn't come in good enough shape. Weidman has an excuse, he fought on 11 days notice and cut 30 pounds. Weidman gassed but toughed it out, Maia had no excuse for getting tired and not going ape **** on Weidman in the third and end of the second.

Maia has to work his striking to get aggressive and get the takedown and get on top. His jits is from his guard but in MMA he can't pull guard easily and if he does and fails to get the sub then he'll lose the round.

 

Definitely needs to take a step back and take a look at his career/training/camp/management whatevs.

There's no reason he shouldn't be included in the top 5 of the division, but he has been struggling lately even the most average of competition (including Mario Miranda and Kendall ****ing Grove).

 

Damn, I didn't even realise he was 34.

 

I could have sworn that Maia's striking was a lot better a few fights ago.

He was terrible tonight.

 

Credit to Weidman, his striking was a notch above Maias and it only became a more even fight when he got tired. Weidman has much better head movement and blocking. His counters are much more varied. Maia's only got his stance right and the 1-2. Weidman was going for supermen punches, kicks etc It was just a different level of skills on show.

Maia looked good against Munoz but Munoz striking is powerful but poor technically.

 

Weidman had a hard weight drain... Maia had alot of time..and looked like ****.

 

for sure, The last time Maia looked good was against Sonnen. His standup improvement has gone stagnet and he really doesn't have powerfull enough TD's to get it ot the matt. Not to mention at this level most guys have good enough bjj defense to nullify Maia's game.

 

So true, I couldn't belive it when Joe and Mike were saying his striking had improved leaps and bounds. How **** must it have been to begin with?
