if a fighter does not make weight...he gets a automatic loss (a UD loss) and the opponet gets a (UD) win simple as that......
When a fighter fails to make weight the other fighter has the option to walk away, the fighter who didn't make weight automatically loses their title or the right to fight for the title they were going for. In regards to boxing the current system is fine, its just when you throw in the TV deals things get complicated because every boxer must feel although they can't let HBO down due to the money.
No, but if the fight gets cancled then the guy who missed weight without giving advanced warning should be held financially responsible. If I paid out of my pocket for a training camp and turned down other fights, I'd seek legal action to get those amounts atleast. For a big tv like Escobedo had with HBO, could be his last on HBO, even more damages.
If he is significantly over the weigh in limit, yes. Fighters often weigh in a half pound or so heavier but usually they're able to lose that after a 2nd weigh in. If a fighter weighs in 2 - 3 pounds heavier then maybe they should be disqualified or something. What Broner done was disrespectful not just to his opponent, but to the sport of boxing. At 22 he can't afford to conduct himself this way.
