My mind says yes but my heart says no because the States would get their arse kicked. ****in' Brazilians! :fire
That's what they said about hockey, there is too many countries with great fighters to suggest that. HW-Fedor- Russian LHW- nobody is head and heels above anybody MW- Anderson-Brazil WW- GSP- Canada LW- Penn- USA- from Hawaii
you're an American who uses the word 'arse'? :think And no, a sport that doesnt even have a set venue, let alone universal rules, will never be an Olympic event.
MMA is in its infancy, so no, I don't think it's ready to be an Olympic sport. In 20 years, I may change my tune. But the sport is still evolving (a lot) and will need more structure, universal rules and more tradition before making it to the "big show."
No it shouldn't. It would be pretty cool but how would they do it? How could they squeeze so many competitors into a 3 week period, you need to account for injuries, some fighters can barely fight twice in 2 months, how could these fighters fight 4 or 5 times in the space of 3 weeks? It would be impossioble unless they had the most ridiculous protective gear and limited ruleset(Old Pancrase)...but then would it still be MMA anymore? So no, its totally not practical and even if it did happen it would be terrible.
It doesn't have to have universal rules. Set venue? What? It already has been Olympic sport as pancration. If curling is olympic sport MMA can be and will be olympic sport inside next 3 olympic games not including this one.
The IOC is seeking to eliminate sports' olympic status, not to give sports olympic status. Taekwondo is the largest martial art in the world, extremely organized (not so much in the US and england though) and it's status is on the line. It recieved harsh warnings for excessive violence, and the IOC told it that it had to make some changes. Notably due to it being a 'judged sport', not a 'measured sport'. If taekwondo is having a hard time staying in, I don't see MMA getting in. Also consider some downsides of MMA. No national teams. Not unified in the US, let alone internationally. Extremely showy sports with pyrotechnics and elongated musical intros, where the fighters are followed by a group of scantily clothed women and a rapper seldom gain merit among GAISF representitives. My prediction: MMA will never be in the olympics as even a demonstration sport, let alone a full medal sport.

An olympic boxing, Taekwondo, or judo competitor takes more far physical punishment in a competition than an MMA fighter does. But MMA's small gloves lead to excessive cutting, awkward kicking leads to shins clanking, and the grappling styles used by some fighters lead to a lot of twisted knees, ankles, elbows, etc... But as far as making it into the olympics I think thats the least of their concerns, albiet a major one. edit: sorry about the double post. still getting used to the format. unfortunatly I dont see a delete post button.
Not likely. That's like saying...in x years , they will dominate soccer. MMA isn't boxing. just like soccer isn't the NFL... There's jiujitsu , sambo , judo , wrestling , muay thai...Too many variations to truely have a really dominant nation. MMA isn't the nba (oops , i almost forgot , weren't the argentinians basketball champs at the last olympics ? and italians winning silver ? ).. Anyway , keep dreaming. No nation will ever have a dominant monopoly in this sport. You'll just have dominant athletes from all around the world.
Closest they have right now are greco roman wrestling & judo. Sambo combines both + striking so that would be ideal but i doubt it'll happen anytime soon.
