But did ali regain a belt against terrell that he previously held?. Making him a two time champ. And go on to win it a further twice? "that's four times despite him being a champ when he regained it.

That's not why Holyfield has the distinction.

Holyfield has his record because on 4 occasions he entered the ring with no titles around his waist, yet left the ring with titles around his waist.

On 4 separate occasions he was considered the challenger.

It's not about having a separate world title it's about having none at all before the fight and having some or all after the fight.

That's why he has that distinction.

Ali was the challenger on four occasions to. Liston, terrell, foreman and spinks. True, he entered the ring as a wbc champion or whatever it was called then, but he was also in effect fighting terrell for a belt. He won that as a challenger. If you look up wba heavy weight champ s ali has held it twice before he was stripped into exile.

Yes but because he had the WBC belt he wasn't considered the challenger that night.

You're misunderstanding the reason behind Holyfield being distinguished as 4 time belt holder.

He's the only man, in HW history, to enter the ring with no belts at all, and leave with the belts on offer 4 times.

I realise that Holyfield didn't have a belt when he won four versions. And I'm not been dismissive of his achievement s. Yes it's a different case for ali and do see your view. But should Havin a belt already and regaining one really alter the fact that he's a champ for the second time. But I suppose it's how u look at it. I still see him as a 3 times lineal champ but he's held the wba 4 times..
Bit confusing to anyone just starting to follow boxing luf..!

And that's it in a nutshell. He challenged for the WBA belt and he won it off Terrell who was recognised by that organisation as the champion. As farcical as it was, that was the situation.
