after the 5th? Grandpa Garcia clearly told Ortiz about three times that he was going to stop the fight, and he didn't respond. Didn't that tell hisc corner that Ortiz was badly hurt and maybe couldn't continue? Were they making the same mistake as Fernando Vargas' corner did during the Tito fight? Thoughts?
I actually wouldn't be shocked if Ortiz was silent because he was as speechless as I was that his corner was basically telling him he was out of it and should quit. I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually his corner that sucked the last bit of motivation out of him. I thought their assessment was way premature, particularly since their fighter had knocked Maindana down with a single punch three times previously. This doesn't excuse Ortiz in Round 6 and and has no bearing for his statements in the post-interview, but it may explain a bit why Ortiz threw his hands up in submission after going down. He was already told by his corner it was over, and at that moment he no doubt believed it.
I don't remember them saying stuff like that, but I do remember them telling him that they were going to stop the fight if he kept getting hit like that. I also remember them saying, "We are going to stop the fight", which I took as they wanted to see how he would respond. Either he was going to say, "Yes, stop the fight" or "No, don't stop the fight." They were even yelling at him saying, "Respondo Victor!" Since he didn't respond and looked like he was out of it, I felt they should have stopped it. I think it was the case of the corner being too brave for the own good of their fighter.
Sorry, I didn't catch your post. But I assume you mean that his corner was too brave for Ortiz' own good?
i don't Agree Resto wasn't getting his ass kicked the way Ortiz was, I don't think fighters should quit but he was about to get KTFO, he was not making it out of that rd.
Yeah, that's what they said, but I found it quite surprising. Even though the tide definitely turned after that blow that busted Ortiz's face, I thought Ortiz was still in the fight, wasn't in THAT much danger, and hadn't shown signs of being out of it or wanting to quit. He had, however, just gotten hit with the worst adversity of his career, and his corner gave him no encouragement whatsoever. I they wanted to stop it, they just should have, even though I would have thought it was unwarranted at that point. I personally didn't take Ortiz's silence as him being out of it, but it's possible.
ortiz should hve gone out on his shield, like a warrior.....he quit, when he shouldnt have quit in the first place, and they had the doc come up there after he already shook his head no mas to say face.....ortiz will never be a champion with that attitude....
He was stunned, by his own admission. I don't think his head was clear enough to answer his corner's questions. When a boxer says "I don't deserve to get beat up that way", you have to question his mental condition. I think his heart is in the right place (dude got up from a crushing right hand) but his head might be another story.
Excellent post. I also noticed his corner saying such things to him, and wondered if perhaps they were just trying to light a fire in him. Either way, I felt they were taking the wrong direction. They should have just been encouraging him to box and move, I believe. As you say, this is no excuse for his post-fight interview regarding his quitting, but I agree that his corner was misguided. If they felt so strongly that Ortiz was ****ed, they should have followed through and thrown the towel, saving Ortiz from having to quit. Corners should know their fighters.
I just saw the fight, a bit late, I know, but seriously I think the ending of the fight was premature. Ortiz was still in the fight. His cut was bad but I saw no evidence of a Barrera style bleeding. What I did see what Ortiz and his corner panic. I think Ortiz could have still pulled this off. He was getting smacked hard at the end but I think it was him losing his mind at the start of the 6th.
True, what Ortiz needed to do was slow the action down, pot shot, and see if the cut would bother him. He needed to cool everything down.
...Ortiz quit, hence the fight would not continue. The whole issue is that he was able to continue, but decided to quit instead. He confirmed this in his post-fight interview. There's no debate on that point.
ortiz does not possess theheart of a warrior and as a result will lose to a warrior with skills anytime. he'll still be able to whup quite a few peeps but he better stear clear of the warriors and tough *******s with heart and iron will.
. . . it will be more questionable and controversial if it was his corner who stopped the fight . . . the fighters were engaged in a tic tac toe battle and both are still very much in the fight.
