The biggest argument, it seems, for Floyd Mayweather not agreeing to meet the smaller Manny Pacquiao at a catchweight of 145 lbs. is the WBO Welterweight Championship title that Pacquiao won from vanquished foe Miguel Cotto.

If Team Mayweather and Floyd's fans are going to try to use Pac's WBO belt as negotiating leverage, do you think it makes sense for Pacquiao to simply drop the belt and agree to face PBF, instead for his IBO and Ring junior welterweight (140) titles instead?

At this moment in time, Floyd Mayweather holds no championship belts. So any titles on the line in potential Pacquiao-Mayweather bout would be Pacquiao's.

What's your take? Should Manny try to get Mayweather to face him at a catchweight by dropping his welterweight title? Does Pacquiao need to drop his welterweight belt in order to get Floyd to face him at 145 lbs?

He should keep the title and face Mayweather with it on the line at 147.

Then if he wins he can decide if he wants to stay at 147 or move back down to 140.

It doesn't matter if he drops his belts. He's already proven at 147. Do you think anyone would tolerate Floyd fighting Spinks at a catchweight?

He doesn't need to drop the WBO belt if the fight is made at 145. That's why the title was on the line for the Pac-Cotto fight which was at 145 also. However, I think Pac should fight Floyd at 147lbs even if they both come in lower.

I think there is a flaw in logic here.

You can fight at 145 and keep the 147 lbs title on the line. :good

I am certainly no Mayweather fan, but if 147 is the welter weight limit and you're fighting as a welter weight, then they should fight at 147. I think Pac can handle it. It should have been that way for the Cotto fight....not that it woulda changed anything.

    why ... isn't 145 lb withing WW limit ... below 147lb?

official weight limit enforces only that no one can fight for the title at that weight class
if his weight is above the limit which is 147lb for WW ... it does not specify any other
limitations even the lower one, so any fighter may come to the fight (at the time of weight in)
at any weight below 147lb ... if they agree to 145lb its their own agreement in the contract
nothing more ... and as Floyd shown us already even contract agreement may be
broken and only the contract penalties (negotiated between two fighters) apply.
