Should Pacquiao’s catch weight title wins be considered exhibition bouts?

You have to wonder how contenders in the division about being passed over. Now, Pacquiao will be fighting Margarito at a 151 pound catch weight instead of the full 154 for the division. This is Pacquiao’s second fight for a title at a catch weight. I think the WBC and the WBO need to either make these fights exhibition bouts or turn them into non-title fights. How can you have a title fight when it’s not occurring at the full weight for the weight class? That’s like playing a smaller football team and having to boil down to a weight that the smaller team can play you at. If something like that happened, I would think it was a joke. And I feel the same way for boxing. This is like some kind of circus thing.I don’t mind Pacquiao fighting these slightly bigger guys, but not for titles if he can’t or won’t fight them at the full weight for the division. But I’d prefer that Pacquiao fight at the full weight and it would be nice also if he’d at least pick out the best fighter among the champions to fight for the title against. Miguel Cotto was a good fighter, but Shane Mosley was considered to be the best of the champions when Pacquiao fought Cotto. And why didn’t Pacquiao go after Sergio Martinez when he was holding the WBC junior middleweight title recently?
It wasn’t until he vacated that Pacquiao went after the belt against Margarito, who was destroyed last year by Mosley. The catch weights, the choice of opponents, I don’t understand that at all. It seems like Pacquiao is collecting titles just for the sake of collecting them and getting handicaps along the way. What’s the point of collecting them if you can’t fight at the full weight and you’re not going after the best fighter in the division? I know the junior middleweight division is weak, but I think there’s at least five or six guys in the division that are better than Margarito.

You mean the division is weak as in it doesn't have a cash cow? Five or six great fighters in a division makes it look strong in my opinion. Some key players:

    -Paul Williams
    -Sergio Martinez
    -Alfredo Angulo
    -Miguel Cotto
    -Saul Alvarez
    -Erislandy Lara
    -James Kirkland
    -Shane Mosley
-Manny Pacquiao (if he can actually stay and fight at a full 154 which I doubt)

Honorable mention: Serhiy Dzinziruk, Kermit Cintron, Vanes Martirosyan, Yuri Foreman, Antonio Margarito, Floyd Mayweather (unlikely that he'll fight at 154 again, but still possible)

The key names are all action fighters who won't bore a crowd. Both Paul and Sergio can and will fight at 154 if the challenge and money is right.

EDIT: Actually Cotto is a cash cow and the addition of Pac would make the division light up even more

The inmates are running the asylum. People pay money to watch greatness, which in our society is linked to stats and awards. Pac needs the accolades in order to demand the money.

I think it's a bunch of bull. Cotto should have defended his title at the full weight.

If Pac lost to Cotto instead I wonder if you will be making this thread.

The catchweight fights just don't mean much, to me. Forcing fighters to drain down to receive a payday is fine in financial terms, but it doesn't help your legendary status. I mean, he's making this generation's most predictable plodder suck weight to slow him down even more. It's embarrassing.

i agree to an extent but older fighters did it, we just gloss over that. pac's not the first, or the last, to do this. weight stipulations have been going on for well over 100 years. **** jimmy wilde did it all the time.

Further proof that being a champion doesn't mean as much as it used to. Imagine telling Marvin Hagler: "This guy wants to fight you, the champ, for your belt which you've earned. But he wants you to drain yourself an extra few pounds for his benefit."

You want the respect and prestige, then beat the champ at full wieght.

Why do you guys automatically assume a few pounds less means they are draining?

Cotto came in to his fight a pound less then his previous. There was nothing to suggest in how he fought he was drained.

Regrds to Williams/Martinez, I don't think this catchweight means anything.

The organizations should leave it @ the 148 - 154 range. It is still in the jr. mw division:deal. And 3 lbs? Margo fought Cotto @ 147 in '08. Its not gonna be an Oscar thing... Margo is still gonna be well over 160, id say 174 on fight night. Action fight, Pac will look super fast against Margo. Pac wont hold much like Mosley did. So w/ Pac speed, worktrate and stamina and Margos stamina and workrate you cant deny that it will be a good action fight!:bbb

I guess its o.k when Pac bends the rules and come with his own rules and nobody else. True champion.
