Should professional boxing introduce the "super-heavyweight" division?

That's why bridgerweight should have been banned from the get go.

 

Or he is the exception that proves the rule.

 

This was attempted twice already(Carnera and Buster Mathis were the champs) and it did not stick.

 

I go against the grain here by saying that actually like all the weight divisions in boxing. It gives the sport a more chaotic energy and makes it feel bigger. Like there is always another set of champions who fought each other at some obscure weight that I've never heard of before.

Its something that's unique, no other sport has such a long history, is so popular and global and so decentralized.

Saying that, we already have a superheavyweight division, though it's just called heavyweight. What actually needs to happen is cruiserweight needs to go back to its old weight class limits so there is a smaller jump from light heavyweight. Since Bridgerweight covers the guys who are a bit bigger but not big enough for heavyweight.

Excuse me getting creative, but how about another take on this:

Let's introduce a super-heavyweight division for fighters who are too big to be competitive with heavyweights. They are allowed to compete in heavyweight like cruisers are allowed, too.

Heavyweight remains an unlimited division open to anyone. If you're a middleweight and fancy heavy you can go there and if you're a sumo wrestler you can, too.

But for the sumos there would be super-heavyweight and we might have six 2-minute rounds or four 3-minute rounds.

Probably wouldn't be for boxing purists but might be interesting to watch and would lure some casuals over from the ufc :-D

Also maybe we would grow some actually good super heavies that then might try to compete in heavy. Saying that I think of Miller but he was best when drugged, apparently.

 

Right and that is for right now. Over last 20 or so years there's been a trend of larger HWs but bigger doesnt mean better. Haye beat Valuev, RJJ beat Ruiz, Usyk beat AJ and Fury.

Should include the population of cruisers too, i genuinely believe the struggles a cruiserweight would face are overblown compared to the struggles a super heavyweight would face against the same competition, and less talent have moved up because of this. I have a hard time seeing Briedis not be top 5 or Hunter and others not be top 10 if they were around, Hunter actually was and could've built his resume if he wasn't so inactive, but thats subjective, based on Usyk being the best heavyweight today. I have a funny feeling the next generation will be the day of the cruiserweights

 

Actually the top 4 now is Uyk 6ft2.5, Parker 6ft3, Dubois 6ft4 and Kabayel 6ft1.5
Nobody over 6ft5

 

These guys are listed at 6’3, 6’4, 6’5, 6’3. Not saying that’s how tall they are but that’s the listing

 

Most assume cruiserweights generally can't compete with top 15 heavyweights unless they are elite yet Parker couldn't show the levels against Massey and got rocked, Opetaia beat Massey up and stopped him. The assumptions are wrong
