I'm guessing most will say no.

I'd like to hear an explanation as to why that is if I can get it.

Nunn, McCallum, Jirov, Holyfield, Barkley, Johnson, Sosa, Littles, Williams, Ruiz, DeWitt, 4-division champion, longevity, not getting sparked out in a single round in his prime or ever, etc.

Pretty much sums up what I would say.

Kalamaby did match some of Toney's big wins, but didn't have quite enough of them, and getting sparked by future Toney victim Nunn is basically a deathblow as far as this discussion is concerned.

Having said that, I always thought Kalambay could've beaten Toney H2H.

Also for a period Toney was considered along with Whitaker the finest fighter on the planet, pound for pound. Did Kalambay ever even crack the top ten? It is debatable at best...

Thread nailed in three posts I should say.

Kalambay beating Toney is an interesting thing though, any particular reasons M2S and anyone else feel the same way?

i agree with these two quotes , i know this is going against the grain on this board but i feel that kalambay is getting a little overrated on here.and his chances of beating toney for me depend on what toney enters the ring

So who did Toney beat that 'matches' a prime Mike McCallum? Toney was having all he could handle with an aging version and probably should have lost to him in the second fight.

I can see what people are saying about the the multiple divisions thing, but to me Toney's longevity isn't that profound when you consider that a lot of it is built off of beating or being competitive with B-listers and shot fighters.

Kind of like the B-Hop syndrome of feasting on nothing more than ok fighters. At least Toney didn't stage manage it as much though, credit to him for that.

Just a thought though: does the fact that Toney struggled and lost to journeymen like Thadzi and Tiberi not count for something? Does the fact that he did no more than hold his own with a Montell Griffin not lower his standing?

On a h2h matchup, I'd favour Kalambay. A lesser version of Sumbu in Reggie Johnson gave TOney all he could handle. I wouldn't make Sumbu a huge favourite though, because Toney could always level it with one punch.

On the one punch Ko: to me that's a lesser sin than getting outhustled over the distance by journeymen (on multiple occasions).

Because he was a good boxer with good movement, which Toney struggled with.

Cause Toney had problems with fighters that had good footwork and fast on their feet. Kalambay had both. He "just" needs to dictate distance the fight is fought at - which he can with his footwork and jab - and he can get the win. Easier said than done though. I favour Kalambay but it will be closer than SS seems to think.
