Should Sumbu Kalambay rank above James Toney?

Been awhile indeeed, too long as a matter of fact. So I figured
I`d drop by and remind somo folks I`m still alive and about, as for encouraging me to drink well I say I`ve never needed encouragement to do so haha!

I can see it now, a scotsman, a brit (or is that kangaroo Ozzie?) and a hungarian sitting around drinking scotch and talking boxing in the pub, ****ing kodak moment that eh?

Anyway, me off to watch and score Ali/Young right new, never seen it befoer and its time I did, will posyt a card later on other thread there, might take a nap first though.

Don't think that win, or those fights, gets the credit it deserves. Noooooobody ever made a prime McCallum look like that. (Well, Curry right before nap time, but otherwise...). Looking that good while making Mike look that bad... incredible.

Ps. Can't help myself from chuckling at the notion that Tarver would be superior to Kalambay. The thought of him putting on a masterclass against ANY active version of McCallum...

Don't remember exact numbers, but I had Mike edging it. Close but clear. Kind of like the rematch with Toney (fortunately the judges got it right once at least).

 

As I say, I can see that argument....I just felt Kalambay won more rounds personally. He was the ring general for the better part of the contest IMO. Mind you, two of the cards were pretty much what you probably had.

McCallum gives the young Toney some serious lessons in their fights. I'm re-watching their first fight now, as I've only seen it once and never bothered to score it :good

 

Impressive post, I must admit.. You make a strong case for Kalambay I am now anxious to go back and re watch some of my old Kalambay fights on VHS (even though VHS sucks) man I wish I had a quick way to transfer over 30 plus years of boxing from my old VHS tapes to DVD, I have the means to do it and I have been meaning to do it forever I just never find the time. Its just sad having a VCR hooked up to my 60+ inch LED TV lol.. But I also wouldn't trade all my old tapes for anything, I recorded nearly all of them myself and in the SP mode so they all still look amazing even today, though they pale in comparison to today's HD quality I marvel over my TV even well over a year later... Anyway back on topic I am going to try to dig out some of my older Kalambay fights and see if I missed something..

 

Just watch him on youtube. Thanks for the kudos. Not sure how you could've missed anything at the time which you'd see now, he'd look that good if he was fighting today, in the 40s, or in 20 years time.

 

Think I'll do the same! All four of those fights are absolutely beautiful to watch.

 

To be honest with you, when he was on the scene I was younger and he didn't get alot of exposure over here that I was aware of anyway, and I remember him being a guy who was a slick boxer, seemed boring and was starched in 1 round by Nunn... I was 14 when he fought Nunn and the earlier fight with Mccallum I tracked down back then because I was a Mccallum fan but I never cared about Kalambay so I have not really viewed his career extensively though I have the tapes, I was lucky that my father was taping fights before I took the operation over in the mid to late 80's.. I'm 36 years old so I have watched fights forever but he was not a fighter I ever cared about, out of curiously how old are you flea?

I will check some of his fights out on you tube though alot of times the quality of the fights are kind of trash there, if I get some time though I am going to pull out some of the originals..

 

Check out Kalambay vs Barkley, Sumbu boxed circles around the Blade for 15 rounds and it sure was fun to watch, re-watched that fight about a month ago. Or Kalambay vs DeWitt, vicious KO over the otherwise iron-chinned Doug in a one-sided domination by Kalambay.

 

Right on :good Big Barkley Fan anyway lol.. So its sure to impress me
