Should Sumbu Kalambay rank above James Toney?

Yeah, he looked much stronger in the late rounds against Watson than against Toney, where he was gassing badly especially in the first fight. And the Watson fight was actually fought at a higher pace. One or two years can mean a lot for someone well into his 30's.

Me and a bunch of my boys way back then watched the fight live and were all convinced Mccallum schooled him (which he did) but if memory serves the HBO announcers not a one of them acted as if Mccallum won!!! Total robbery!! May have to pull this one out as well lol :D

I felt the only incorrect Toney-McCallum decision was the second one. Mike won that one.

I thought the 1st and 3rd calls were spot on, honestly.

I agree. I remember being satisfied with a draw in fight one, two I thought Mccallum clearly won.. I don't remember 3 at the moment.....:think:think

The draw was perfect, frankly. I can't find 7 rounds for either fighter.

In the second, I just liked Mike's work better, and I can't remember too many sequences that James had the last word in. He just got outfought and outgutted, close but clear.

James beat Mike the third time. A bit close, but clearly. He reversed the 2nd fight, imo. I've never met a boxer or a trainer who didn't have that an even series, though. They were a terrific style mesh, and in a fair mind, had even results against eachother.

Wasn't Mccallum clearly out of shape looking by the time they met for the 3rd fight?? If memory serves it was a dull affair and didn't seem to mean much to me at that point...

McCallum was ancient by the third fight, it was a meaningless bout. He still gave a good, competitive effort though whenever his stamina could hold up.

I felt Toney salvaged a draw or potentially even a narrow win in their first fight with the 12th round assault on a tired McCallum. The rematch had scandalous scoring, but nobody seemed to give a damn as Toney was supposed to win so he could go onto bigger things.

Yeah totally my thought on all 3, I was good with a draw in the first one but Toney did bring some heat late so if you had to give it to someone then I would say James but like I said a draw worked and seemed fair.. The 2nd fight to this day still baffles me that no one said a thing during the broadcast, it was like Toney just dominated in there eyes (BS) And your comments on the 3rd fight seem on par with what I remember of the it...

Toney really turned the heat up only when McCallum tired late, and really does a good job in the final round. A 10-8 round?

The third fight counts as much for me as the Hopkins-Jones rematch. McCallum was shot at that point.

Mike clearly proved himself superior to Toney h2h. He did better in the fights where he still had anything left and also did comparatively better against Jones.

Kalamabay, on the other hand, came off slightly better in his two fights with Mike. His win was clear while his loss was close.

I was thinking along those lines the first time I watched it, but the second time I only had it as a clear 10-9 to Toney. He rocked McCallum, but Mike was more gassed than in serious trouble IMO.

I actually thought Toney won the 2nd fight-going to have to watch it now.

I was thinking along the same lines.
