A lot of fights come down to a referee's decision to stop a fight when both fighters are on their feet but one is hurt. Instantly, boxing fans and pundits question the timing of the stoppage. Would bringing back the standing 8 count be a good idea? Pros: gives referees time to actually evaluate a fighter to determine if he is able to continue, gives fighters the chance to recover a bit. Cons: can be used by incompetent/overzealous/corrupt referees to cost a fighter a point, can give fighters just enough time to recover and take more damage. Overall, I am a big fan of a properly timed standing eight count and would have loved to see one on Saturday night. What do you think?
Another recent example: Demarco over Molina. A standing eight and the fight continues. Please add your own.
I'm on the fence about the standing 8. It could lead to more damage taken, but it could also mean less early stoppages. Gun to my head I guess I'd say err on the side of caution and protect the fighters. But it is a hole in the system. There are lots of examples...... And of course I can't think of any. PS-good OP.
Thanks. Obviously most of the guys I watch fights with are about my age (36) and grew up with the standing 8. A couple of recent fights have begged the question. I figured I would get an idea of how ESB feels about it.
I'm not in favor of it. I think it'll just add more problems due to inconsistency of it's usage. If a guy is getting pummelled, not fighting back, normally that's when the ref will wave off the fight as a TKO. Add the standing 8, then the ref can simply stop the barrage, give a standing 8, and allow the fighter to regain some composure.
Not universally. Some commissions no longer use it. Kind of like how in some places you can be saved by the bell and in some you can't (or in some, there are special exceptions for the final round)
Fighters can take a knee if they want to win some time under heavy pressure. So, they are in control. Therefore, the referee should let the fight continue until a fighter takes a knee or he gets hurt badly (TKOed). No need for a standing 8 count, unless the fighter was just kept up by the ropes, in which case, he wasn't technically standing anyway. So, no.
