Should there be a new weight between Light Heavy and Cruiser?

Baffled as to how there isn't some sort of weight division between light heavy and cruiser as the gap between the two is just way too large. Is there any chance a new division could be met in the middle i.e. a super light heavy or light cruiser, using the older cruiserweight limit of 190lbs back in the day?

Seems very daft to me to have a weight class where some are weighing on on fight night in the mid 180s and in just the division above these big boys are rehydrating to anything from 210 to 215lbs. What happens to a fighter whose fighting weight in the ring is around 190-195lbs? Are there any examples of boxers like this who are stuck straddling in between the two divisions? I just don't see the logic in such a large gap in weight between the two divisions.

The thing is with rehydration you can weigh 195 on fight night easily as a light heavyweight.

    So no, not needed really

    absolutely not.

the divisions width on movinh up classes is supposed to get wider due to proportions. Once you figure in proportions then you wont be baffled. The change that needs to made is in your maths ability.

So at what weight would be the upper limit for dehydrating to 175 rather than make 200?

    185? 190? 195? 200? 205?

If you are natural 205 pounds for example does mean you can be a cruiser when those guys come down from 220+

What's a safe amount of dehydration?

    200-175=25
    175-168=7
    168-160=8
    160-154=6
    154-147=7
    etc...

How does that math work for you?

Lool I was actually just messing around but yeah fair point. On a serious note I was looking at rehydration weights for light heavies online and honestly haven't seen anyone weigh in at like 195lbs at all. I've seen high 180s but that's about it, if you can find anything though that would be great. But if your fighting weight is around 195-200 seems like a very annoying position to be in.

NONE of these junior/super divisions are necessary for safety. The orgs just started creating the junior/super divisions to make more money for themselves by creating more champs and charging more sanctioning fees. That's THE ONLY REASON most exist.

If anything, they need to start cutting divisions, not adding divisions. Especially with all the "rehydration." Everyone enters the ring TWO divisions above the weight they are supposed to be fighting in. All these divisions are totally unnecessary.

    Seriously.

The sport began with only three divisions - Lightweight, Middleweight and Heavyweight (small, medium and large, if you will).

Three divisions is probably too few, today. But you don't need a helluva lot more than that.

You certainly don't need 19 or 20 divisions.

The sport has four-, five- and six-division champions because there are too many divisions.

Go back and look at all the divisions where the same guy kept moving up and winning belts, and start eliminating some of them first.

You don't need THREE divisions between 105 and 112. That's INSANE.

Since I started following boxing in the 70s, they've added the cruiserweight division, the super middleweight division, the super bantamweight division, the super flyweight division, the light flyweight division and the minimum weight division.

You could make an argument that the only one that WAS necessary was cruiserweight, because people today are bigger than they were a century ago. Super Middleweight was a stretch. Adding FOUR NEW divisions below 122 pounds was nonsense.

How many grown men are there who weigh less than 118 pounds and punch each other in the head for a living? Even the guys who fight "at bantamweight" weigh 130 pounds or more when the bell rings.

Move weigh-ins back to the day of the fight, not 36 hours before. Cut all the super divisions below light heavyweight. That'll leave you with 10 divisions.
    • Minimum weight
    • Flyweight
    • Bantamweight
    • Featherweight
    • Lightweight
    • Welterweight
    • Middleweight
    • Light Heavyweight
    • Cruiserweight
    • Heavyweight

That's plenty. (And maybe even too many).

And if anyone suggests adding one between light heavy and cruiserweight, for example, then eliminate one from the bottom.

Keep it a tight 10, at most. Preferably fewer.
