Should there be an age limit set for what age a fighter can fight until?

obviously as a fan we should be wanting to watch the cream of the crop. theres an automatic fall in the market for progressively less than that. Noone should be accepting world class fights with 40year old men, baring the odd exception. Sadly it became easier to sell them over more risky younger title worthy opposition, following on from years of mismarketing - particularly in divisions where the previous champions made it trendy to fight bums.

boxing has evolved that we are happy to be sold weakened fighters as legit world class. Evolution is sadly, going backwards as much as going forwards.

 

Yeah, every boxer wants to earn millions and no one wants to get brain damage. But boxing (and life in general) doesn't work like that. One has to risk to get the reward.

 

But at well into your 40s brain damage and health damage Carries a higher risk in boxing.

And your.family, daughter, son, grandchildren have righta on you too. You might love the sport... but when your health is gone... whos gonna pick up the pieces..
why you gonna make your family go through loss.

 

That's true. But a grown-up man should make those decisions for himself, don't you think so?

 

I think in cases like this a enforced age limit should solve the problem. Taking too many headshots over your career can impair your 'grown up' adult judgement.

Some boxers pick up the sport in their late teens or twenties so their heads are fresher and bodies not as damaged so they can carry on for longer, for me, if a boxer aged 35 has had more than 6 stoppage losses, he should never be allowed to fight again.

 

I was joking but there’s also truth in jest. My take on it is that all of the pearl-clutching done by fans about Benn and Eubank’s ages and concern for their health is hypocritical bull****. You can in no way be a fan of boxing and care about a fighter’s health. Ben and Eubank are down to the bone warriors (as are Holmes and Foreman) and if these men choose to fight - whether it be for money or glory that might only exist in their heads - they’ve earned the right. Look at Mosley, Toney, Taylor (and only God knows how many others) who aren’t even 50 and slurring their speech. We were all more than happy to cheer them on when they were accruing the damage but now that they’re shells of themselves boxing fans want to claim some moral high ground and say, “Oh no! It’s wrong for you to fight. You might get hurt!”
What else are these guys, who are probably barely literate, supposed to do? Go get their forklift operator’s license? All their lives all they’ve known is fighting. If they’re both willing then I say let them do it. I personally believe it’s far more immoral to sanction women’s boxing. And I think it’s heinous to sanction a fight between some young Olympic stud with a cab driver who’s 3-14-4 with the sole purpose of the stud scoring a violent KO in the 2nd round in order to build him into an attraction with a 20-0, 19 KO record.

If you’re concerned about not wanting boxers to run the risk of brain damage then don’t watch or support boxing. You can’t have it both ways, bud. You can’t be thrilled to see Ali or Holyfield or a host of others engage in boxing and claim to be concerned about CTE or pugilistic dementia.
