Should Tyson be inducted to HOF

There hasnt been the same Buzz around the HW dividion since Tyson was champ. Even the Lewis era was dull in comparison.

 

Lol it was massively dull, and despeite Lewis having a load of ko's etc, ppl despised him for his everything behind the jab boring style lol
The holyfield-bowe era was cool tho, but the question on everybody's lips was when is tyson coming out of prison.

I think the argument here is that given his behaviour, should he be eligible?. In the Baseball HoF if you are responsible for bringing the game into disrepute, then you are blackballed from the Hall of fame and banned from being inducted, no matter how great you were.

That said I'm sure there are quite a few dubious characters in the IBHoF (Jose Sulaiman anyone?) so the standards for entry are not on a par with the Basebal HoF

Personally I think it would be ridiculous if he were not in there

Dan I agree with your position that Tyson should of course be inducted into the hall of fame, but i have to disagree with your assumption that Tyson was the biggest attraction in boxing history .. Jack Dempsey was a far bigger draw, media is different in these eras and its hard to compare but interest in Dempsey was phenomenal .. I'd also like to make a point about how Tyson, while being a great and ultra exciting fighter, dragged the sport of Boxing through the mud more than any fighter in history .... Boxing is my passion, but watching Tyson bite Holyfields ear because he knew he'd get beat, goes against the grain of everything boxing stands for and that was the moment i lost all respect for him .. Boxing is the nobelist of sports were one man's character is on the line for all to see, Tyson's legacy will be remembered for this act of cowardice far more than his glorious, destructive wins .... Boxing history is littered with 'truly' great fighters who take their beatings like champions, fighters who go out on their shields like warriors .. Tyson doesnt belong in that category for me, but of course he belongs in the HOF with the standards that they have set for themselves in the past .. Tyson gave boxing the shot in the arm it needed in the mid 80s but then weakened the sport beyond repair with his subsequent craziness ..

Not so sure personally about the 'Dempsey' issue as I don't really know too much about it and I just know of the money/success Tyson accumulated.

I agree that he isn't an ATG and that he isn't a boxer one should be directed to in terms of representing the 'Sweet Science'.

In his day though (as short as it was) he was destructive like nothing that had been seen. His persona was half of the draw with him, people were waiting for him to do something all the time. His negative aura and the darkness which he was surrounded by was what people wanted ultimately.

I have the following book at home and I would reccomend it to anyone who has an interest in Tyson. It relates everything that went right and wrong for him to the present day America. Absolutely fascinating read :good

Dan you've made an absolutely brilliant point there about Tysons 'Persona' .. That was the real money-maker, because it totally spooked out his opposition to the point that they were so worried about him that they didnt focus on their own gameplan and tactics to face him .. Tyson is without doubt one of the biggest names in boxing history, but its the act of biting an opponents ear that is a total disgrace .. Imagine if every fighter who thought he was going to lose a fight resorted to these tactics, we wouldnt have a sport, boxing would be out-lawed and rightly so. I personally have way more respect for 'journeymen' fighters who have records of 45 fights, 17 wins, 25 losses and 3 draws than i do for Tyson .. Imagine if these guys, who are brought in to lose, bit the ear of opponents every time they were frustrated or thought they were going to lose .... The Tyson story is a very sad episode of a guy that had true greatness in his grasp, but totally self destructed and can never be remembered as belonging with the true greats ..

 

I dont think the people around him helped him but I don't buy all this 'If Cus hadn't have died' pulava either.

Tyson was just a nasty boy. He was a hoodlum, not the kind you see hanging round the streets of London or anything, he was a mean, mean Son of A *****. No doubts whatsoever he probably killed/helped to kill people in a Brooklyn which is those days was one of the toughest places to grow up. He made good on himself with the help of Cus but as the saying goes...."You can take the kid off the streets, but you can never take the streets out of the kid" :good

Having a man that traumatised and that rich was always a recipe for disaster.

Either way, a fantastic fighter at his peak. Just a shame that things turned out the way they did
