We can't. The alphabet belts indicate damage that is irreversible. I have always treated them with contempt, but I can't boycott them. Not if I want to watch boxing.
Making the ring title the only true noticeable one doesn't fix the problem. The rankings are all opinionated anyway. How about we just stop complaining about what we don't like and focus on what we do which is boxing itself. We are not the ones in control so let's just enjoy the sport and don't worry about who has what belt. Think about this. If there was just one champion in each division then people would wait several years for a shot at it having to wait on those ranked ahead of them. This isn't basketball where it can be decided in a week or so. Boxers need time to heal after these fights. Leave it the way it is. We have sense enough to know who more deserving champions are.
The alphabet titles aren't the real problem. The problems is multifaceted. The various sanctioning bodies rarely have the same guys in their top ten. Promoters easily manipulate the rankings. That's where mandatories like Gary Lockett and Mahir Oral come from. If you hold a title, it is impossible to become the #1 mandatory to another sanctioning bodies champion. All this **** needs to change. If 3 or 4 guys have titles in a given division, they should be required to fight each other, or vacate. The orgs should agree on a top 10. Absolutely no one should get into the top 10 without beating a top ten fighter. No one should move up the top ten without beating a a fighter who is ranked higher (unless someone drops due to a loss, someone retires, or leaves the division.) The champ should have to defend against the #1 contender at least every 9 months. top 10 guys should be required to fight one top 10 guy every 6 months, or lose the rating. Do this for a little while, and eventually the best of the division would end up at the top.
No, because some of the titles would be like the NABF or USBA titles are now; part of the path to a mandatory spot.
I guess one solution is to boycott every title fight that isn't a unification fight. Boycott any fights that would result in the division of those belts. However I can't see that happening. The other solution is to come up with a huge sum of money; I imagine 5 billion would be a comfortable start. Begin a new boxing organisation. Base the initial ranking off the Ring magazine but institute mandatories. Remove a couple of weight divisions. Offer twice the purses that fighters are currently getting. Buy out their contracts if necessary. Get the best fighting the best. **** off all the different PPV options. One dedicated boxing channel, every title fight is a PPV. They would be worth it.
