At any rate, with the brutality of several 4 oz gloved rounds, the sport will be banned rather quickly. In MMA it's doable because fights are never more than 4 rounds and most of the action is gay wrestling on the floor. Plus they can't box.

Well, i think the problem would be that more than half the matches would end in stoppages on cuts. In todays boxing, it usually means controversy, a big debate (see Lewis vs Klitschko) and often a rematch to settle the score. But if that many of them end in it? I think the sport would lose credibility, as it would basically come down to "who cuts least".

I mean, even back in the day, fights went on for hours without a clean knockout winner. The 30 seconds to recover rule makes knockouts very hard and one could clinch and pretend to be thrown/knocked down for another 30 seconds.

Which brings me to another aspect: the extreme unpredictability of the fights length would make it very unpractical, if not impossible, to sell to TV stations.

I'm guessing the brutality would still kill the sport. Hell, i would probably consider it too brutal and i love boxing.

Plus, smaller gloves in general is just less interesting to watch. Long term strategy, combination punching, covering up and countering on the ropes all are great to see, but would be reduced to a minimum with 4 oz gloves.

As a scientific experiment it would be interesting though, see if after a decade they go back to the hands-by-hips stance.... and growing moustaches.

Gloves protect the hands, not the other fighter. They just allow guys to take too much punishment. Boxing is by far the most brutal combat sport.

It would also bring a lot of fans. One of the reason boxing has lost so much popularity is because its become so far removed from real fighting. Think of Winky Wright using his gloves as shields or the referee stopping the fight as soon as the fighters get close.

 

The Ring did an excellent article about this a few years back. At the time it was thought someone like Tyson would be virtually unbeatable, and a Camacho would lose out.

The conclusion of the article was; with a tightening up of the rules, it would be possible, as certain aspects of LPR actually are safer for the fighters than Queensberry rules.
