Since the rise to fame of MMA mainly last year, boxing seems to have sorted itself out this year. 2007 has been the best year of boxing i can ever remember. (hopefully all the matches come off)

    My question, is this:

Have boxing promoters/fighters/Networks agreed they needed to stop fighting with each other, and make the big fights happen to make boxing compete more sucessfully with MMA.

Or is it just a coincidence?

In case you dont know about 2007, there have/will be some monster fights coming up.

The sooner Boxing pushes MMA away, the sooner I'll thank them.

    competition is always good

it brings prices down and better products out

i think if mma keeps putting on strong ppvs, we wont have barerra fana etc

yes, competition is good. It has led to many great matchups being made the rest of the year. The Arums, Kings, Golden Boys etc saw the handwriting on the wall and did the right thing....for a change. Arum and de la Hoya have kissed and made up, so we'll be seeing more and more good fighters in there with good fighters and not lay downs.

For the first time in awhile, the promoters got worried- and they did something that they should've always been doing, putting together good fights. I know you need to give your fighters some easy fights to make some $$$ in a fight where they can look good and thus raise their profile; but at least now they've realized that those fights are only justifiable if you have the tough fights as well, and sometimes you've got to risk your "name" fighters to keep eyes on the TV and asses in seats.

I hope 2008 is more of the same.

MMA's growing popularity helped some promoters to get their **** together and make big fights happen.

    yes, definatly.

I think boxing proved it's worth this year even to the blood-thirsty MMA fans. Fights like Cotto-Judah and Amonsot-Katsidis and MArquez-Vazquez 2 were much more compelling and action-packed than that of the high-profile MMA fights. I personally like chess-match type fights over bloodbaths, but regardless boxing is having a stellar year with so much more to offer in the last 5 months of the year.

Definatly glad Oscar and Arum kissed and made up, Cotto-Mosely is my favorite match of the newfound treaty between the two.

And in terms of the PPV market, no MMA event looks close to touching Mayweather-DLH. I don't hate MMA, but the artistry-history-and drama of boxing in unparallel. Two men on their feet breaking each other apart with they fists is more my cup of tea over two men boxing for 30 seconds (usually the best part of a MMA fight) and then grappling for the other 4 minutes and 30 seconds of a round.

Around the world boxing sells out arenas, has massive appeal, and all the "boxing is dead" talk is just american journalists talking about boxing fading from the mainstream of the NFL, etc. Around the world boxing is huge! HUGE! Boxing is not dead, never will die, and this MMA competition has raised the bar in terms of promoters pitting the best fighters against the best fighters.

good post. dont underestimate MMA though. youd be surprised how many people think this hugging is more entertaining then boxing. Boxing will eat all these "fight fans" up with good mathups on free tv like pavlik taylor cotto mosley(probly a ppv) marquez vasquez. But then again, mMA is still evolving and for it to be compared to boxing much less called superior says a lot about a sport that hasnt been around that long. Ah yes I thank not MMA, but the Ultamite Fighter for the resurgence of not just boxing, but all combat sports in general. Think about it. boxing died in the 90's then suddenly resurged violently in early 2000's. 2001 the ultamite fighter came out and people started watching. all of the sudden MMA is HUGE and if boxing plays it cards right theyll HUGER! (still)

I believe that it could really help boxing get better?
Think about it MMA offers PPV cards with 10 fights, most are competitive.
Boxing PPVs only have 3 fights and they aren't always any good. some fights are farces
I believe it will force promoters to make good fights. People are sick of the mismatches in boxing

From what I have seen MMA is said to be popular with the young audience so boxing better put on good competitions otherwise in the future it really will be behind MMA.
