Should Wilfredo Gomez' record of 17 successive KOs in title defenses stand ?

Look at the record of Mizuno's oponnents; you'll have to pick his best win from fighters with 15-8, 12-2 or 22-12 records.

Him not being off his feet isn't surprising, since he faced scrubs all his career.
The guy was ranked number 5 in Japan, ffs.

How does that make him a "fringe contender for the world title" in the eyes ofDrew101, i'll never know.

4 months before the Sakad fight, he was losing to guys with 2-0 records, for god's sake.

No 20 year old coming from Muai Thai should fight for the world title after only 2 pro bouts.

    Period.

I'm pretty sure the guy who was 2-0 had an incomplete record, given that in Lee's previous fight, he had defeated a guy who was 18-3-3. At the very least, it indicates that Lee wasn't a scrub.

    17.

Travolt missed the three title defences that occurred following the loss to Sanchez at 126.

Elchivito makes a good point regarding Muay Thai fighters often getting pushed toward championships rather quickly.

    * Saensak Maungsaurin (3 fights to win a world title)
    * Veerapol Sahaprom (4 fights to win a world title, following wins over comp that weren't necessarily any more impressive as Sakad's first two wins)
    * Muangchai Kittikasem (6 whole fights to win a world title)

As well, Naoya Inoue, Kosei Tanaka all won world titles at very young ages, each within a half dozen fights.

That's often how it's done in the Orient.

A couple more things about Sakad, and Sakad-Gomez:

    * Gomez was a legit ATG, enjoying arguably his best year as a pro. Royal Kobayashi (a former WBC titleholder at 122) was handled just as quickly as Sakad. Gomez would go on to defeat future titleholder Leo Cruz, along with Zarate in his next two fights. Losing to someone like that is hardly a knock on Sakad's quality.

    * A tribune collapsed prior to the fight, resulting the multiple deaths and hundreds of injuries. Gomez may well have handled Sakad just as easily, but that had to weigh heavily on the Thai's mind going into the contest.

    * It's not like Sakad completely faded into obscurity. He won his next 10 bouts and the OPBF lightweight title. I wonder how he mights have fared had he decided to fight for the WBA strap, instead.

I'm not saying it's Gomez's best win, but it's not one that should be completely dismissed, when one makes the effort to look beyond the surface.

There is no getting through Travolt, despite numerous people pointing out to him that Boxrec records are incomplete, he continues to take the record of every fighter on there at face value.

.......and you're right, Gomez had 17 consecutive defenses of his superbantamweight title!

Wait until Wilder is on defense #18. You'll be singing a different tune then.

People also need to realize in the 60's, 70's, 80's and carrying into the 90's many boxers fought under different names; so their records may show 2-0, but in reality their records are different...!!!
