The question is not "Is this the best fight out there for Williams?", as obviously it isn't. So don't vote on the poll with that question in mind, and don't raise that as a topic in this thread. In a just and fair world, Cory Spinks should be able to get a crack at the belt he lost controversially to Verno Phillips. Any chance of him avenging that loss was blown long before last night (it was blown when the Williams-Phillips fight, with its inevitable ending, was signed). Fighting Spinks would not be exciting, profitable, legacy-enhancing or very appealing from a risk/reward perspective. However, it would be the honorable thing to do, and regardless of how you feel about Spinks, as a boxing fan it's a win-win situation. Here's why: Scenario A) Spinks wins clearly (or by stoppage :nut ). Not great for the sport, or for the glamour of the 154 lb division; but justice will have been indirectly served, a wrong righted. You can't hate on that. And if you're a Spinks fan, this is terrific. Scenario B) Williams wins clearly or by stoppage. This would put Spinks at 2-4 in his last 6, effectively killing any momentum and relegating him to the breakdown lane on the world class expressway and probably nullifying his desire to compete (especially if he gets stopped, which could happen in a fight with PW at 154 if he's unable or unwilling to avoid close exchanges like in the loss to Verno). If you're a Williams fan, cool he beat another known commodity and bolstered his resume. If you're a Spinks hater, what could be better than to be rid of him once and for all? Scenario C) Close controversial decision either way. Okay, so this isn't desirable as it will either 1) create a rematch nobody will want to see (unless for some reason their styles in the first fight match up to make the most spellbinding barnburner in light middleweight history :yep) or 2) if a rematch isn't granted to whoever loses, it will create endless resentment and bickering among fans over "unfinished business". At least we'll have a better idea of whether Paul really belongs in the ring with the elite (and under 39) at 154. It may not be pretty, and it wouldn't generate enough interest to headline a BAD card, but this fight would be educational however it turns out (and not unenjoyable to some purists). And as listed in scenarios A and B, there's the chance something really good could come out of it.
Willimas doesn't have Spinks' belt. Phillips was stripped of that IBF belt. Willliams has the WBO interim belt and Spinks is set to fight Lattimore for his old IBF belt.
What're you laughing at? There was a belt on the line last night, how the hell was I supposed to know by looking that it was the WBO? :tong
No,Spinks vs Phillips was for the IBF and anyway Spinks is gonn a fight for the title anyway.Williams should go for Dziziruk like he said he will
Why are people still voting? atsch Can you ******s not ****ing read 6 posts to find out that the thread is now N/A, is that how bad the average attention span is here?
if i were williams id avoid spinks like the plague not because he cant beat him but because cory (who i do rate) has a very unpleasing style and a stinker with cory could really halt williams momentum at the moment and its already hard enough as it is without this fight. The only reason he should fight spinks is if spinks beats latimore and it was for unification
Yes he should but if he ducked Spinks it would be understandable a fight with spinks will be reminscent of the first quintana fight
I think williams can beat spinks but i think it be a very very boring fight cause of spinks disgraceful boring style and spinks don't have a punch. Imo i think Williams should go after Kirkland. Since Kirkland thinks he's better then a prime Mike Tyson, he should prove it by facing Williams.
