It does modern boxing no favours when the likes of 'Money' only fight once a year. Back in the day world champions were fighting at least twice a year and often more.
Most champions today fight at least twice a year. Mayweather has been the notable exception the past few years. But even back in the day, you had Jack Dempsey who routinely went a year or more between fights.
They don't have to, but most ought to. It drives me insane to see no-name beltholders take the Mayweather plan and stay inactive (to Floyd's credit, he's improving on that himself) like they have anywhere near the name value and bring in anywhere near the purses to make it a smart business move. A lot of these guys pick up belts before they get famous and really need to rack up defenses to capitalize on the belt.
problem is, the ranking system is very flawed....but then with the champ being forced to defend more often, the champ will eventually fight the deserving contenders.
yeah at least one defense per year for each belt would be OK, I guess if the guy is unified then two defenses per year should be mandatory
I have met a lot of great fighters. Amir Khan, Ricky Hatton,Tyson Fury, Herbie Hide Enzo Maccarinelli, Audley Harrison, John Mcdermott. The cage fighter James Thompson.
I think they should fight at least once a year for the title with the number one contender from the top ten list and once with any fighter they choose out of the top ten list, but not for the title. If they lose to the fighter they pick then that fighter automatically gets a shot at the winner of the fight for the title. :bbb
