Should you automatically win the round 10-8 with knockdown?

A knockdown is the biggest thing that can happen in a round aside from a knockout, So yes to majority of the time.

JourneyMan is right, and at 54 years of age I've seen it numerous times over the years. If fighter A has won the majority of the round, and fighter B knocks him down, the judges have the option to not score the round 10-8.

I've also seen it in the WBC judging guidelines/handbook.

Fighter A can also score a 10-8 round without knocking down fighter B.

If fighter A bashes fighter B from pillar to post for the majority of the round, without a knockdown, the judges have the option to score the round 10-8 instead of 10-9. But I think most people know and understand that rule.

Yes it should be 10-8. Going down gives you time to recuperate. It would encourage fighters to drop a knee whenever they're slightly hurt if it wasn't scored like that.

It’s not the rules but I think the judges see it as a get out of jail card. As if they had no say in that round because thems the rules 10-8 when in reality it’s not.

I always think scoring it 9-9 in these situations would be fair. You’re penalising the lad for getting dropped but also rewarding his work that he’s won the round otherwise by taking one off the other lad. The other lad is penalised for getting outboxed but gets a draw out of the round for dropping his opponent.

People don’t like drawn rounds but a situation like this is a good example of when people might claim one.

That got me thinking Jurgen, I saw an amateur fight years ago with the old scoring system where a boxer scored a knockdown yet lost the fight 2 - 0 on the cards!

The refs and judges are not accountable for some of the garbage on the cards.

I remember Big John McDermott v Tyson Fury and Danny Williams where Big John clearly won both by a mile.

I recall Williams barely able to stand up and being deducted 3 points for holding - would love to see those cards as somehow Big John never got the decision.

I remember scoring the first pacquaio and marquez fight and scoring rounds won by the guy that got knocked down as 9-9's, and if my memory serves me right I actually marquez winning.

10-8 would be the fairest way to do it and keep it universal. Anything we can do to avoid mongo judge decisions we should do.

Yeah big John got screwed big time against Fury. With hindsight that fight was a big wake up call for Tyson who in the early days of his development always looked like a knockout waiting to happen.

I remember reading an article on Big John in Boxing Monthly when it still existed. He had an awful lot of bad luck outside the ring which affected his fights from what I remember.

I met Big John a few years back on Oxford Street waiting for a sandwich at a takeaway. He was working on the London rail extension, sadly having made peanuts from boxing. A genuine humble lad appreciating the support from boxing fans who knew he had been well shafted a few times.

If ever a man deserved a break in the ring it was Big John.

Yeah he would appreciate the support bud. Such a brutal sport where hardly anyone makes money.

Bit unfair imo. If a fighter gets back up and boxes the other guys ears off, how is it fair. The guy who gets back up and puts it back on his opponent, especially in a war of attrition deserves to be included, points wise, in the round. It must be a fair portion of the round obviously. It takes some real bollocks to get back up and have the courage to take the fight back to your opponent, especially if your hurt.

It’s a difficult one but I don’t like the straight 10-8 ruling. Should be an option for a 10-9 but I think it needs to be clearly defined (if it isn’t already).

A guaranteed 10-8 would removed any incentive for the grounded fighter to win the remaining 2:50 of a round should he be put down in the first 10 seconds. Most boxers fight on instinct I would add, so unlikely.
