Ok, the inspiration for this is my own boxing and thinking of Mayweather vs Pacquiao. My own experience has shown that its much harder to shoulder roll on a south paw due to the position of the lead right hand being able to come up over your own left shoulder much easier. Of course I am no Mayweather...but then the guys I have sparred havent been Pacquiao either. Anyhow, my question for classic guys (who seem to know boxing more then most of the bother forum guys) is this....do you know any classic boxers who have used the shoulder roll well against south paws (i know mayweather has fought southpaws..and won..but they where closer fights then they should have been realitive to his ability).
He still had success using the shoulder roll against those lefties. He switches to a high guard, so his counter hook over the southpaw jab has less distance to travel and can land easier. He can still use it on the inside, where the southpaws shoulders are squared up taking away the space needed to use the angle advantages of being a lefty. Here's a clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WF299XH1w4#t=0m50s Floyd's beat up 6 southpaws in his career. I know he used the shoulder roll on Corley, Mitchell, and Judah. It was in the 5th round of the Judah fight where he managed to roll off a Judah left to the body. Anyways, Judah was the only southpaw to win any rounds against Floyd, and he won the first 2!
It can be done, shoulder roll is an angles game and the alien nature of the southpaw angles makes it harder to use. Mayweather switches between shoulder roll half guard and full guard against SPs and has tended to be pretty aggressive against them
of course i guess the question becames...as good as mayweather is..how will he deal with speed and angles of pac from the southpaw stance (if it ever happens) anyhow I really dont want to make this another "mayweather vs Pac" thread...really just curious of the history...ill look into some of the the fights..espically the leonard one....thanks McGrain.
