got a question ive been boxing for 5 years, and i have a quick question is the orthodox shoulder roll effective in the amatuers as it is in the pros.I dont see alot of amatuers doing the shoulder roll,to counter right hands alot, like alot of pros. just curious
why would it make any difference, if your blocking the shot with the shoulder roll then countering you still scoring and your opponent isnt.
The shoulder roll is an excellent technique. I think it has a great possibility of being effective but amateur judging isn't as good as it should be and the system is very flawed and I have seen fighters block shots with there shoulders and the punch will be scored against them (mainly the Olympics) and I'd be shocked. But I would advise you to try to perfect the style now so that hoping you do turn pro (good luck with that, by the way!) you would be able to transfer the style onto the pro scene. Many fighters had styles that wasn't as effective in the amateurs but when they turned pro it was a completely different story. I do, however, believe the shoulder roll is effective for amateur fighters. You'll be fine with it. A modern day example is Puerto Rican banger, Juanma Lopez whose style in the amateurs didn't bring about the best of records but it is a different story now. My advice for you is to perfect your style in the amateurs and then transfer it to the pros. The shoulder roll is a great technique.
