I started practicing boxing with my friend who used to be an amateur boxer. We don't really have a boxing gym nearby, so we just use the speed bag, double end bag, and heavy bag in our rec center. He taught me the basic stuff like movement, throwing punches, etc. Anyway, he recently got commissioned and had to move to a different state, so I'm more or less doing things on my own. I was practicing going to the body yesterday and I had a few questions about the positioning of your feet: When you're digging, should I be bringing my head down for added power? Or does that not really have any bearing? Should I be turning at all or mostly using my legs and coming down and up, if that makes sense? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Your head should move like it is a part of your torso, and you certainly don't want your chin in the air when you are punching. You want to turn, if by that you mean getting the weight from one foot to the other; that puts you in position to throw the next punch. I know what you mean by coming down and up and they don't have to be mutually exclusive. When you punch to the body remember to get your punching shoulder to the level of the target.
