I actually posted something on a thread about a week back talking about how amazed I was at how many people who box, or even people on this board that don't beleive in God (or so it seems really). I think you answered my question...
I agree with everybody else in saying it isn't 100% true they all have unhappy childhoods, but most cases. I mean seriously think about it. Think of all the races it's dominated by, and there backgrounds. Even in winning you still get hit...So why would anyone that's happy, good finances there whole life, and come from a great family want to fight competitively?
It's hard for a man who's doing well in life and a joyous person with no worries to compete against a guy who's fighting so his 3 kids can eat.
There are exceptions...Just look at Mayweather, and Pac really. Mayweather of course had $, and I know Pac didn't. But Pac has no reason to fight anymore, and he's one of the most joyous people you'd ever see.
Gotta feel sorry for people though who have to make a living like that (no matter big of checks they cash). Many are away from there families, many get hurt, many don't make it big time, etc.

you make a valid point. Especially the part about domineering fathers.

I just picked those two because you could see how close they were with their families and seemed to have happy childhoods.

 

I don't agree with this. Any one can an unhappy childhood and not box. Some do it because they actually love the sport. Some do it because they had an difficult childhood experience that they believe being able to fight would have prevented. Then there are those who because of unhappiness, may have founfd an outlet through the agrression of the sport. I believe being poor as a child and being angry about that will lead one to box as well. It can be one thing other than a unhappy childhood.

 

I hated my father at first when I met him him but I grew to love him during one of his trucking runs.

 

I fight, and i Love it, i also had a great childhood. Only my teenage years have been rough

 

No disrespect to them because they always put it all on the line, but they're not the elite of the elite either.

Floyd didn't grow up as broke as some of the other boxers, but he did have a crazy family. He said it once on 24/7 the reason he so great at the hurt business is because his daddy would beat his AZZ whenever he messed up in training. That pain marked him for life, so he wants to inflict pain on others to lessen his pain.

This reminds me of the recent thread saying that fighters come from poor backgrounds.

I'm from Britain and most fighters I've known personally had great childhoods and came from middle or lower middle class families. Even our recent well known fighters like Hatton, Calzaghe, Khan , Froch etc, aren't known to have had bad childhoods/poor backgrounds from my knowledge.

It's just another generalization.
