Show Some Respect For Joe Calzaghe!!!

Lost all respect for joe and his dad in the hopkins fight. Both were equally as frustrated and confused throughout the whole fight and it from enzo saying, "what the fcuk are you doing out there"? and "you need a KO"! Whn they got the decision it was "you got your ass kicked".

Classless, they shoulda just said it was a close fight and they need to go back and watch the tape.

Why should he have to cross the pond? He beat alot of Americans, the more known ones being Sheika, Brewer, Mitchell, Hopkins and a faded but still Ring top ten LHW Jones. Calzaghe wasnt worried about Johnson, it wouldnt have made much sense to fight Johnson (around 10 losses or so at the time) anyway after he lost a close decision in his 3rd fight with Woods, who was nowhere near as good a fighter as Calzaghe, and Calzaghe had beaten Sheika and Hopkins who hold wins over Johnson also.

Thats not really an answer, its still very forgotten that Calzaghe was willing to fight Hopkins in America giving Hopkins a massive payday which Hopkins then back tracked on, but whats to defend when someone wins WBO, WBA, WBC, IBF, & Ring SMW & LHW titles?

bottom line man, there's a reason for all the calzaghe hate. things can be spun any which way but his resume is underwhelming, that's all. i don't doubt he was a tremendous talent and the best 168 pounder ever. his resume however just isn't that great. we likely aren't ever to agree on that, which is fine. he only has two real notable names in their primes and both have been shown to be fairly limited. i happen to think hopkins has the much superior resume, but it's ok to disagree on this one

Fair enough.
As you say things can be spun any way, & I could do the same with Hopkins resume made up predominantly with smaller fighters on his record, Wins are taken for what they are when they happen rather than what happens to careers after, thats like saying Hopkins win over G Johnson wasnt great because he hadnt fought anyone of note when they fought, lost his next 2 straight after and has lost many since, but in truth its not a bad win.
I would say Calzaghe also gets alot of hate for being a winner as well and could make a good argument for alot of his wins, but thats not really the underline of this thread,

absolutely, and discrediting calzaghe is pointless...and redundant. it's been before. people are gonna prefer some fighters over others and calzaghe just happens to really pollarize fans

I agree with what you say about Calzaghe pollarizes fans, you can add Hopkins & Abraham to that as well

1 - i don't think joe gave a flying **** what people in the states thought of him

2 - he had talked continuously over the last 3/4 years of his career how his motivation was on the wain and how he was struggling to get up for fights. a fighter without hunger is in a dangerous place.

3 - he knew he was getting old. his strengths at that stage of his career were his workrate and reflexes and they are aspects that would soon diminish.

4 - its common knowledge his hands were ****ed. he'd lost power in his punches, again a fighter with diminishing power is in a dangerous place.

5 - he was 38 and a loss at that age was likely to never be revenged because he was only going to decline as a fighter from that point on. a loss at that stage of his career would have undone everything he had achieved and left everyone with a stick to beat him with forever.

if calzaghe had retired at the age of 32 then i would probably have the same criticisms of him myself but the fact is that calzaghe got out of boxing at exactly the right time. he was only going to deteriorate as a fighter from that point onwards.

despite being a fan, i agree that its a shame that calzaghe didn't move to the states earlier but its also fair to say that the likes of hopkins and jones had little interest in fighting calzaghe because he was a high risk / low reward fighter for them to face when he was at his peak.

All i hear about is how he strategically orchestrated a low risk, high reward career. He has to maximize his returns, of course if your promoter offers you joe the taxi driver for equal or more money in your backyard, instead of prime roy jones in america, you and anyone else is going to fight the taxi driver. It's a no brainer! Yet he gets bashed and hated on for doing, what any logically thinking, limited talent holding fighter would do atsch for real, we should be praising calzaghe not bashing him, he lived the american dream without ever being from america. He achieved superstardom without ever even having to challenge himself, that is amazing and impressive!
