Jessie Vargas held his ground and showed a solid chin and exceptional body work as usual again Leonardo Tyner. Tyner also showed his iron chin and iron body as well. He took 100 hard body punches in the early rounds and continued to slug throughout the fight.
There were dozens of fouls....Both Tyner and Vargas ended up hitting after the bell, and consequently, Referee Tony Weeks took a few punches himself it appeared.:D
Vargas was stepping up to 147, and looks poised for a title shot. He should get one this yr if things continue this way.

In the UC co-main, former title challenger Deondre Latimore fought an unknown Columbian named Milton Nunez. Nunez looked amatuerish at times, lost others, but was able to get Latimores respect. Latimore has a solid beard and has never been stopped, but the tall scrawngy looking Columbian got his attention it seemed as Latimore set out early to take it to the taller man. But it seemed each time he'd hurt the Nunez with a hard L hand or a R hook, Nunez would fire back combinations off the ropes and back Latimore up.

From around the 5th Latimore cruised, in and out potshotting the slower less prepared man.(Never been 7 rds.) In the 9th round Latimore set out to close the show. But as typical, the Columbian countered off the ropes, and turned on the former challenger and stunned him badly. Latimore was out on feet.
Nunez pressed the action and stole the show. Joe Cotez had earlier warned Nunez to show him something or he'd stop the bout. But he very well should have stopped it in the 9th. Instead, as he went to pull Latimore out of a hold, he fell, and Cortez started a count.

Cortez saved Latimore who then ran for ALL of the 10th round. The winded Nunez couldn't catch him, and he won a MD. I scored it a draw.

Latimore then claimed to be back. IMO......he was never there to begin with.:think

Entertaining scraps, just finished watching now.

Vargas looked good. I liked the body work, especially in early rounds. Any idea who he will fight on May 5?

IDK who he's gonna get for that one, but it seems he deserves a softer body than he faced last night. Tyner has always been a tough fight. And last night he proved his metal. Yeah, very entertaining scraps.

What about that Columbian Nunez? I though for sure having been KO1d X3 that his chin was paper, but he took about 100 power punches last night and never seemed hurt.

I know that Latimore is supposed to be the one to watch, especially since signing on with Mayweather, but that Nunez showed some toughness in a fight he was gassed in about the 4th round.

I was overall impressed. He needs to move to the US and train. Get on with a decent promotional team and get in shape.

He could potentially make some noise, and if nothing else, make some cheddar against guys like Kirkland or Angulo.:thumbsup

    Once again, ShoBox > FNF.

    Anyone see a trend developing?

I'm not sure their budget is all that much bigger, either. Showtime Sports probably allocates most of their funding into Showtime Championship Boxing on Saturday nights. And it isn't like ESPN is some podunk cable access operation either, they're a huge media conglomerate and FNF has been one of their flagships for a while (even in a climate in American sports media that hasn't been especially boxing-friendly for the last couple of decades)
