According to Dan Rafael in his weekly notebook, this is pretty much official. A four man tournament between Vic Darchinyan, Abner Mares, Joseph Agbeko and Yonnhy Perez. The fights will be on the same cards, so Darchi-Mares and Agbeko-Perez II will be on a card Nov 6 or Dec 18 and the winners and losers will face off some time in 2011. This is excellent news, but it could have been better. Apparently Hasegawa turned down an offer and that **** Bob Arum refused to let Montiel and Donaire participate, stopping another Super Six from occuring. Seems like Bob Arum is as much to blame for ****ing up Donaire's career as the people who seem to duck him. Regardless this is awesome and I can't wait!!!!!!!:happy:happy
good news but like you said could have been a hell of a lot better but i think the straight knockout system is better than griup stages so an 8 man straight knockout tounement would have been emmence
This, if it happens, will be much better than the Super-Six which I am increasingly becoming frustrated with.
Quite happy with this. Mares and Perez needed a rematch anyway. Could have been better though. I would definitely have liked to see Donaire and Montiel in there, but on the other hand this almost definitely means they will have to face each other now. Initial prediction is that Mares wins the tournament.
Here's a link for anyone interested. Just scroll down a wee bit. http://espn.go.com/sports/boxing/no...light-heavyweight-piques-chad-dawson-interest
Arum is really taking the ****, putting a ring fence around his fighters and only letting them fight each other. Hopefully this tournament will sort out one side of the division though.
I've said this before, in an ideal world, the winner of the tournament fights the winner of Donaire-Montiel. Would be brilliant.
Great News!! Thanks for heads up. Well a major reason why this may be more appealing to us hardcore fans is that the wee men like to fight on a regular basis where as the bigger guys seem to wanna have 2 months more off. Great Line Up. Well Done Showtime.
Listen to the latest edition of The Boxing Truth radio podcast, there is a piece about this tournament. Someone mentions on the podcast that Arum won't let his fighters participate in the tournament because he wants the rules where if a fighter loses they are out of the tournament not like the current Super 6 rules.
:good Unfortunately, neither of them are names in the US. Hopefully that can change, maybe Hasegawa could fight the winner of Moreno-Cermeno II? :hey
Yeah, we can't forget those guys as well. The division is stacked and what's even better is that the best and biggest fights are being made. Some interesting times ahead, for this division at least.
great that were are going to see 4 great fights but.....were missing the best 4 Bantamweights in the world in my opion. 1. Fernando Montiel (WBC & WBO) 2. Anselmo Moreno (WBA) 3. Nehomar Cermeno 4. Hozumi Hasegawa 5. Yhonny Perez (IBF) 6. Abner Mares 7. Joseph Agbeko 8. Vic Darchinyan 9. Eric Morel 10. Jorge Arce Arum said they would be willing to do an 8 man straight knockout and Hasegawa said he would do it if Montiel was involved. there no reason why you couldnt have the winner of Moreno vs Cermano into a a quater final format with Montiel, Donaire, Darhchinyan, Hasegawa, Mares, Agbeko and Mares. Either way....I see Mares coming out on top, which means we will see no fight between the winner. None of these four are in the Ring top 3 either.
