I think Lampley is the best straight announcer in boxing. RJJ is the best boxer/opinion man. for a 3rd guy id rather see Bernstein in there than merchant. I dont mind kellerman as much as most though. Tarver still stutters too much and doesnt have enough insight that he can actually verbally express. I dont care for farhood at all, he looks like stork.
Lewis was horrible too. Agree, these guys lack verbal acuity. Boxers dont always make the best announcers and certainly dont make journalists. I think Foreman was a decent announcer and IMO Shannon Briggs would be a good announcer if he could somehow make himself presentable.
Showtime clearly. Unless you enjoy Merchant's senile drunk ass talking and Lampley's "BANG! BANG! BANG!'s"
I think Lampley is the best blow by blow man in the business when he's on. He does have a tendency to show favoritism at times, but for the most part I enjoy his commentary. Steve Albert I also enjoy. Gus Johnson can be annoying, and he clearly doesn't have the best knowledge of the sport, but I'll take him any day of the week over Bob Papa. Papa, imo, is the worst blow by blow man in the sport. Dude damn near puts me to sleep with his monotonous tone and lackadaisical delivery. It could be a FOTY candidate he's commentating, and I still get the impression this dude is sitting ringside reading a magazine, occasionally looking up to make a few bland comments. Papa seems like a guy who would be more at home commentating Tennis or Golf. Larry Merchant is hit or miss these days, either you hate him or love his drunk ass. Roy Jones is great and Al Bernstein I don't feel one way or the other about. Max Kellerman used to annoy the **** out of me, but over the years I guess I've become immune to his nasally voice and repeated rants about sanctioning bodies and linear titles.
Showtime are vastly superior. for one we aren't subjected to wanks like Lampley giving his own opinion after reading compubox stats. secondly we are subjected to further useless wankers like Harold Lederman who couldn't score in a brothel never mind a fight. thirdly, Kellerman's commentary is shocking, especially in the Calzaghe-Kessler fight and he failed to pull Lederman up on his pathetic score card in the Alexander-Kotelnik fight. fourthly, post fight interviews by HBO are shite. fifthly, Showtime have shown vastly better fights than HBO have shown in the last 2 to 3 years. sixth, Fightcamp 360 is vastly superior in quality than 24/7
I voted HBO for Larry alone. I guess I've just grown up with the guy so I really like hearing him to the commentary. Other then that I couldn't give a **** either way. Steward gets on my nerves and jim sounds like he just did a line sometimes but hey, to each their own.
