First off, I think that Showtime is doing terrific things so far in 2008 with their coverage of boxing. They have added fights to their schedule (David Haye-Enzo Maccarinelli) that have had worldwide implications.
That being said, I really think that they are missing the boat on one potential fan-friendly, fight of the year-type brawl which could be made right now.

After learning yesterday that Mikkel Kessler was definitely out of the May 24 bout with Edison Miranda (can you actually pull out of a fight that you haven’t signed a contract for?), I was told that Warriors Boxing (Miranda’s promoter) had offered the network a bout between Pantera and Sakio Bika.

Bika is a former world title challenger who also happened to win Season 3 of The Contender in November with a stirring knockout over Jaidon Codrington in a fight that received a lot of year end attention.

If you can think of five more fights anywhere in professional boxing that guarantees more fireworks than Miranda-Bika, email them to me - because I can’t think of them.

Two men who agree with me are Leon Margules of Warriors Boxing and Jeff Wald, the Executive Producer of The Contender.

“I offered Bika to Showtime but they had no interest,” Margules told me.

“I believe they had their heart set on Kessler and couldn’t get their arms around Bika. I have not spoken to Ken Hershman (Showtime’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Sports and Events Programming) myself, but I intend to do so. Bika and Miranda is a terrific fight,” Wald told me.

Like I said at the beginning of this Blog, Showtime has done great things so far in ‘08. Getting Miranda and Bika in the same ring would certainly continue that trend.

    Miranda-Bika is Showtime worthy.

Let's petition Showtime. Their just trying to be cost-effective, and aren't thinking about the people. We want boxing!

This fight should be on tv, free tv not a premium station.

I would be interested in a Bika Miranda fight. In the SMW division they are at the same level in terms of rankings and the winner should get a title shot at Bute in my opinion. WBC is out of the question given that Froch and Inakin are fighting an eliminator and that winner may go on to fight Kessler.

Indeed. It should be on ABC's Wide World of Sports. But network/cable companies have long since forgotten how profitable boxing is.

I don't understand how they can show MMA on CBS, but ABC, NBC, FOX can't show nicely produced boxing match. It makes no sense. Hell they could sponsor a boxing tourney for big bucks and it would still be less than 4 episodes of any sitcom.

I am not sure what OP means with a fight with more fireworks - since I can think of 10s of fights with more firework. But hell - they could call it.

Battle of the Titans: The runner-ups at title fights.

How about Manfredo-Bika or better yet, Sergio Mora - Bika, if that is possible?

That could be named Battle of the Titans: The contenders, who are no longer contenders.

:good Precisely. World Championship Boxing used to be something the family could sit down and watch together, and sports pages, everyone would wind up knowing who the champ is.

    Two problems here:
    1. News ain't covering boxing.
    2. Even the boxing community is unsure just who the champs are, because of the alphabet belt junk.

This fight is not showtime worthy, Miranda might be, but Bika is certainly not. This fights a FNF main event IMO, not much more that.

    1. Nonito Donaire-Cristian Mijares.
    2. Kessler-Mundine
    3. Klitschko-Klitschko
    4. Cambell-Diaz II
    5. Pavlik-Abraham

    Just to name a few....

I disagree though. MMA has countless number of organizations, Pride, UFC, EliteXFC, BoDog, etc.. all of them have their own champs, but it is still popular and the fans who follow the sport all know who the most dominant fighter in a division is. The same with boxing. When you think about it the news doesn't cover MMA either, but it is still popular, because the leagues cater to their fans.

Boxing needs to sell itself to the networks, they are used to HBO and Showtime bidding on fights, why don't promotors go to NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS to broadcast their fights.

It makes no sense that you saw no boxing promotors taking advantage of the writer's strike to put new boxing on tv on the cheap.

Bika fought a hell of a fight on the Contender finale, with Codrington. He went the distance against Calzaghe, and is a pretty entertaining C-level fighter. I'd like to see this fight on television.
