Wasn't there a rumor also that Moonves told Espinoza to cut Haymon off unless the Pacquiao fight was made? This could also be a case of the network freezing out Haymon or at least not paying for his fights just as much as it's a case of Haymon being finished with the network.
Sure they are happy but don't you think they would rather be showing the other cards than NBC, ESPN, etc. :think HBO froze out Haymon. Looks like Haymon is in a way freezing out Showtime. Heck this could be a ploy by Haymon to have Showtime start over bidding for cards again he is a smart guy. I think we all know what his end game is here but it is going to take 3-5 years for it to play out first. I did see where is budget is coming from a hedge fund and is much smaller than then 225 mil that was originally reported. I want to know when or how he will start turning a profit on the time buys.
Yeah but they knew Haymon was going to be "sleeping around", so to speak, from the get-go. That was known going in. Having a non-exclusive deal for PBC events is a horse of a completely different color from killing off the decades-long tradition of Showtime Boxing and completely alienating that entire (statistically very significant, rivaling if not matching HBO's) pay-cable fan base. That's like having an open marriage but then your wife sucks off your own brother.
I actually heard he had like $450 million to play with since it was a 1% allocation of a $45 billion hedge.
There are shows they could televise without the involvement of Haymon or Golden Boy. Actually, hang on, looking back through all the big events listed on the "big fights" page that aired on regular Showtime in the last couple of years - wow. Actually, turns out every one involved either a Haymon guy in the main event, or someone promoted by GBP. ShoBox, though? Some of those were just smaller cards run by mid-level promoters without any Haymon talents on them. Greg Cohen and Lou DiBella cards and such. What happened to all those?
Haymon is a slick character. Your marriage example nailed it. Right now I am fine with this as it means more free boxing for us. Also, it seems as if distancing themselves from Haymon has actually made HBO step up their game and they have put on better cards and had batter ratings. If anything this has helped HBO which is kinda hilarious.
True. Kind of like how (exposing my past mark self here, but..) the nWo sort of ended up helping McMahon in the Monday Night Wars?
pretty much the exact same thing. I am just waiting for Jim Lampley to do a heel turn and turn into a 'Mr. McMahon' type character :rofl
Yeah!!! I noticed that and meant to mention that in the OP. They are no longer even in the drop-down list!! Listed under the USA: CBS CBS Sports Network ESPN2 Fox Espanol Fox Sports 1 HBO NBC NBC Sports Network Spike TV TruTV UniMas I mean, that list isn't comprehensive anyway (it doesn't include, notably, beIN Sports Espanol, or Telemundo, or some other Spanish-language networks that air boxing...or Comcast Sports Net which does feature the odd card, usually small-time regional ones but sometimes national) but still.
Dead serious, if there is going to be anything less than a fight a month on average moving forward I'm canceling my sub.
