Showtime Is Showing HBO How To Deliver Good Fights

Greenwich, Connecticut - The Super Six Super Middleweight tournament just started this past weekend and the feedback has been great for Showtime.

It's good to have boxing fans worldwide excited about seeing the best fighters squaring off against each other. Showtime should be commended for putting together this incredible tournament with a smaller boxing programming budget than HBO.

The national membership director for the Paper Champions Society, Tom Rutowski, announced that he hopes the Super Six tournament is a wake-up call for HBO to get their act together and create the best fights the fans want to see instead of kissing up to Oscar De La Hoya and Golden Boy Promotions.

"On numerous occasions Showtime has picked up fights that were originally turned down by HBO and the fights turned out to be highly exciting competitive fights. On the other hand, HBO has overpaid for the licensing fee to pick up fights that held no interest to the boxing fans. Those fights turned out to be boring fights with poor television ratings.

I don't understand how you can have the biggest boxing programming budget like HBO, however, can't consistently broadcast the best fights possible. " Tom Rutowski asked.

"In my opinion part of the blame for the decline of the boxing business on television falls on Golden Boy Promotions & HBO. It amazes me how HBO allowed Golden Boy to negotiate an output deal that gives them several HBO television dates. While other boxing promoters who could provide HBO with exciting fights are left out in the cold and unable to secure an HBO date."

    Tom Rutowski asked.

"What was HBO thinking when they decided that the rematch between Chad Dawson and Antonio Tarver was worth a $3.2 million dollar licensing fee?

The first fight was a boring fight with poor ratings. After suffering through their first fight, boxing fans were not interested in a rematch between Tarver and Dawson. Showtime realizes that from a budgetary standpoint they can't compete with HBO. So Showtime employs a philosophy of providing boxing fans more value with less money. " Tom Rutowski explained.

The Paper Champions Society would like to commend Showtime for its efforts to create the Super Six tournament. This innovative format provides boxing fans with the opportunity to see the best boxers in the super middleweight division fighting each other to decide the best super middleweight in the world.

HBO had blown just about all of their Boxing budget by June of this year. How in the hell does that happen especially since they promised to deliver better more competitive fights!

Don't get me started on the Golden Boy deal. Golden Boy basically has HBO by the balls until 2011. Golden Boy only has a few good fighters both of who are up their in age. It seems all of their touted young prospects have been exposed this year in fights a few showing awful Glass Jaws.

HBO is getting absolutely owned by Showtime with this tourney. Good for them, they've been bringing us consistently better quality fights for years now.

You do know that this paperchamp guy is a joke, right? Fairplay about HBO, though. They certainly don't spend their money wisely.

Lets be honest about it, HBO will NEVER do something like a super6 tournament.

They would rather put on Pac vs DLH 2 or Dawson vs Tarver 3.

Showtime is the absolute win, HBO can go **** itself.

    And Max Kellerman...lol.....

Please bring boxing back to free cable television, that way us boxing fans do not have to watching boxing on internet stream sites. There also needs to be more competition between the networks.

For real. I don't know if it was a mis-print or I just don't remember exactly correctly, but I read somewhere (maybe Hauser's latest article on HBO) that Dawson vs. Tarver 1 had something like 169 fans there, and obviously a pathetic gate. Even if it was meant to read 1,169, that's pretty bad for a fight of that hype/level/supposed magnitude.

Showtime has a long way to go. No punchstats? Not even showing one of the big fights live? Is that how it's going to be the rest of tournament, littered with tape-delays and amateurish production?
