This would be my favorite upset of the year, followed by Williams over Hurd and then Ruiz over Joshua.

 

Steve Farhood has it 59-55 Charlo, giving Adams the sixth. Farhood says he was cognizant of not falling into the "score for the guy losing because he did comparatively better than before" fallacy trap, but thinks he wasn't doing that.

You could definitely give Adams the sixth, reasonably enough. It was close.

 

Round 7

Charlo is reaching in with jabs, nothing doing. Adams just too slippery, tightly coiled, arms up, mobile, riding elevator up-and-down, gliding laterally. Adams working the body very nicely from outside, sharp-shooting. Practically nothing landing for Charlo, at least on legal scoring areas, plenty of stiff-arming, back-clapping, and rabbit punches - but Adams rolling & twisting with all of that fairly well. Adams is economical to a fault but is still landing more.

Round 8

Charlo is jumping in and crashing the left hook into Adams' lower jaw, throwing himself bodily into the punch and moving with feline predatory swiftness. Adams recovers and squats very low, kneading the name lettering on Charlo's trunks with jabs from an upper-body plank, chest parallel with the canvas. Lots of wrestling as Charlo swarms in with hooking flurries, mostly missing until he gets right up close and can wedge an uppercut into the midsection. Charlo missing jabs as Adams flicks up his bicep to catch them, sending them skidding off to the side. Lots of clinching, strategic by Adams, killing time. Beautiful counter overhand right by Adams late.

I'm rethinking my read on Adams...he might be hoping just to gain the distinction of going twelve against Charlo...or he's working a brilliant game plan, throwing just a handful of punches each round, making Charlo expend lots of energy, and banking on going for a late KO (which looks more and more plausible...)

 

Mission accomplished, Charlo looks shite.

I'm happy whatever happens now.

 

Round 9

Charlo is whipping jabs out at the face, missing or grazing. Adams is putting his elbows out like spikes and bending forward as he lunges toward Charlo like a modified post-apocalyptic vehicle from Mad Max, then winging powerful hooks up just above shoulder height, barely blocked in time as Charlo checks them with windshield-wiper motions of his right arm. Adams is ducking & weaving in, feinting to body and head. Charlo backing up and painting the area of Adams' face with the jab, very infrequently making contact.

Farhood has it 89-82 Charlo, same score as I have, but but a slightly different route.

 

Round 10

Adams now bulling his way in. Sloppy underhanded body combos by Charlo, caught on the elbows of Adams. Very effective left hooks scraping the navel by Adams swooping in, tying up and backing out. Charlo suddenly connects on an uppercut, buzzing Adams. More big uppercuts spammed by Charlo chugging along, wide-based, hands down, very rigid. Adams making Charlo flinch and step outside just showing feints with both hands from a variety of altitudes, stunting Charlo's momentum.

I haven't been paying close attention to him lately in the corners, has Freddie Roach been this non-verbal for long? He used to always have a few words for a fighter on the stool, especially heading into the championship rounds... Now? Terse, disinterested. "Two rounds to go... *sigh*..."

Like, c'mon, Freddie, fat lady hasn't sung yet, bust out some x's and o's...you're the coach here... it's kinda your job.
