I may be in the minority when I say this, but I prefer Showtime for a couple of different reasons. HBO may have the better production values, punch stats, etc. but the commentators on Showtime are head and shoulders above HBO. Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley are colorful characters, but Steve Farhood strikes me as the most knowledgeable voice in the game. Al Bernstein has been a class-act since he was at ESPN. Even with a smaller budget, and with less to entice fighters, Showtime has still managed to put on good shows consistently, whereas HBO has a much larger budget, yet fails routinely at giving the fans what they want, especially in terms of rematches.
I've always said HBO but Showtime one-upped em with the Super6 and Pac-Floyd falling through. So Showtime.
Showtime has been showing the better fights lately but HBO has the better production and the better commentators IMO.
showtime has been bringin the ruckus recently, better cards, super6, shobox.. hbo hasn't done **** this year worth talking about.
HBO shoots themselves in the foot when they have guys like Max Kellerman commentating a fight and at the same time complaining about how terrible the match is. They sure haven't done a good job selling the sport to the public in that regard. Showtime's commentating is better but production at HBO is untouchable. Personally, I enjoy both but the commentary on HBO subtracts from the action; they get on tangent conversations during rounds and are sometimes blatantly biased. Showtime consistently puts forth good fights and tries to make fights when the time is right, not just when they'll make the most money. Showtime.
Tarver was a great addition to the showtime broadcasts as is the other black guy (don't know his name) But IMO Larry > Bernstein
I love both but when I compare them here's how I view them. HBO Boxing: Big budget, marquee fighters, fewer competitive fights, PPV's that don't justify the cost, good commentators. Showtime Boxing: Smaller budget, fighters looking to make a name for themselves along with a few marquee name to boot, usually airs the more entertaining fights, all fights are free, honest commentators who are critical of the fight game/fighters when it's called for. I can't put my finger on it but aside from the big marquee name fights HBO sometimes has, I prefer Showtime. HBO constantly promotes and overhypes B and C level fighters as if they're the next big thing and I sometimes get the impression that Larry, Jim, Max, and Co. sometimes don't speak their minds while the crew at Showtime comes across as more honest and as fans and not just commentators. I'd like to see HBO put together a tournament half as intriguing as the Super Six and produce a reality show as honest and engrossing as Fight Camp 360. 24/7 is all style and very little substance most of the time. It's just one big commercial. Showtime definitely!
I really enjoy HBOs production and it characters lampley and merchant. I associate HBO with boxing at the highest level ,i mean if your a boxer and your fighting on HBO your doing well. Everything about it is boxing at its best. Max kellerman can be a bit biased and egotistical sometimes but thats a minor thing for me. Showtime is not nearly as glamorous for me. I cant put my finger on it but they are 2nd to HBO for me. Tarver is an excellent pundit with a good eye and calls everything a spot on. Al bernstein has been around for ages and knows his ****. Top class pundits without a doubt but if you asked me which Broadcaster do i prefer to watch a big fight it would be HBO everytime.
