I think the importance of getting Kenny would be to revamp the entire announcing lineup, getting rid of the weak links, and showing him that Showtime is serious. I mean Showtime got JB to come to the fold for Inside the NFL, he is a big time commentator.
To be entirely fair Ibet the Showtime execs get more of a return from NFL freaks than boxing enthusiasts. I see your point...but there are more cost effective ways to revamp the unit than Brian Kenny which is probably a pipe dream anyways. The casual fans probably don't know the difference between Kenny or Nick Charles or Herbie Hancock or such and such. If anything they should spend LESS on commentators and more on getting good fights set up.
I think you have to have a 1st class production, then you can worry about having the best fights. I mean HBO has a lot of crap fights and already Showtime has more competitive and better fights, but because the production is so low that doesn't come through. Up there production, make their boxing seem like actual events that have importance throughout the world, like HBO does, and Showtime could eat into HBO's turf As for Inside the NFL, there is a reason HBO let the program go, it isn't profitable and the format is dated. Showtime is wasting money on it, I mean it really is nothing but a glorified highlights show that comes on onces a week.
Doubt it. According to Pavlik, he's a middleweight and that tournament is at SMW, doubt the winner will move down for Pavlik. Besides, Zuniga and McKart aren't in the tournament, doesn't work if you want to get Pavlik in the ring.
I could get that on Showtime easily. Just by watching their Strikeforce shows. Its all part of TV. Thats why football, basketball, and MMA are pulling huge ratings. Because of their great production value. Showtimes production value looks like its trapped in the 80's with its crappy quality.
I like the showtime fights, even though its not the same caliber of fighters as HBO, the fights are still very enterteining
Showtime's schedule to this point in the year has been ****, and I know because I've taken the network for years. It's obvious now that their upcoming schedule is going to take all of their money, and I'm happy with that. All I ask is that they do ShoBox cards more frequently. Those cost essentially nothing.
Doesn't Showtime have a far lower budget than HBO? If that's the case, on a dollar per dollar basis, i like Showtime better because they try to make fights that matter. HBO does too but they also have a lot of bias. Seeing that they are the main dog in this business, they try hard to overhype their fighters. Any Showtime fighter that gets big will eventually go over to HBO. So i guess in that sense, each network is serving their own purpose. HBO trying to make the big name fights and Showtime producing the prospects that become the big names.
Showtime definitely has done a better job being cautious with its money. To HBO's credit, though, they've started to figure out that they can run a strong operation without tossing around millions at every shiny object. They've started to drive a harder bargain with Arum and also have rejected lots more opponents than they had been in recent years. I hope the Showtime tournament is a big success so we may see more of this kind of thing in the future.
How do you think "success" will be measured for this tournament? Obviously, the regular fans who watch Showtime will tune in. So it will be based on TV ratings and new viewers? Or some other criteria?
