Round 3

Something caused a lull in the action, it looked like maybe a headbutt (and Pino certainly sold it as one) but the replay shows it was a left uppercut on the body from Rosa that made him wince and turn away. Maybe he was claiming it was low? Ref didn't have a good angle to catch what happened so whatever it was gets glossed over. Rosa is on the warpath, hooking off the jab and throwing high looping lefts on the way in. Rosa now doubling the jab and then slamming a left uppercut into the belt line. Ref warns Rosa not to stray low. Pino scratching and clawing with left hooks and short rights on the chest of Rosa to fend him off at mid-range. Rosa briefly goes into a shoulder roll to catch shots on his left mitt while twisting away while pressing in.

Round 4

Rosa is busily jabbing away to kill time between and set up body shots, but finds that Pino's in no rush to go away. Pino actually doing some respectable work inside, leaning in with his arms in prayer position in front of him and then breaking guard and ripping hooks in bursts. The heavy lefts on the body from Rosa when they come through always get Pino moving like prey, however.

Okay, this is the round in which Pino suffered his only previous defeat. If this is to be a statement performance for Rosa, time is nigh (and nearing past)

 

Round 5

Rosa is landing sharper blows and in higher quantity but Pino putting up a stubborn argument, palms to his chin, with uppercuts on the inside and sandbag rights up top when they separate. Rosa letting off three and four shot combos and then leaning back, seeming to wonder just how to push the magic button here.

Round 6

Rosa is following and tossing a 1-2, pace growing lackadaisical. Rosa gets Pino almost trapped in a corner and starts to whip in body shots now behind the checking jab up top. Pino just keeps chugging along, moving his feet laterally, protecting his mandible, and throwing enough to disrupt Rosa from mounting anything sustained. Both throwing fastballs and grazing in exchanges as each defends, very cagey.

Round 7

Rosa is walking through a succession of right uppercuts plugging him in the gut and lead straight rights to his throat, which he is dodging by sinking into a deep recline and moving his rear hand up to shield just in case. Rosa deflecting jabs inside off his right forearm and working shoeshines on the head and hooks on the body. Pino returning fire with uppercuts. Rosa with a few unanswered hooks. Pino tries jabbing, gets stuffed by Rosa's jab and then crunched on the liver with a left. Rosa teeing off in a phonebooth, landing around and through Pino's guard but also taking shots in return.

Commentators keep saying "Pacquiao"...now, they're speaking a bit too rapido for my delicate güero ears but my feeling is they're questioning the logic of being called "Mini Pacman" when showstopping power and killer instinct aren't really part of your game. Simply being a fast southpaw in the lighter weights isn't quite fully what the doctor ordered.

 

Round 8

Rosa is crossing wrist-hilts with Pino dashing in, hoping to bar his left jab from entry, but still eating a couple when he opens up pressing with body combos. Pino's gum shield comes out. Pino turns away from Rosa in the corner after being hit low; Rosa has to self-admonish from taking advantage. Absentee ref nowhere to be found. Rosa is fervently working the body, but the long volleys are heavy on speed and light on mustard. Pino is shooting jabs down the pipe when he sees Rosa starting to lean in with his gloves low for body hooks, and sometimes answering with his own pendulum rights downstairs.
