Just watching some Leonard fights and realised that the two fighters on most WW all time H2H lists are interchangable as second and third. I find can see that anyone can argue that Armstrong can be higher for graetness with his resume and sheer amount of fighst he had but i find it crazy h2h as Leonard looks head an shoulder above him with his tecnical ability and ring awearness.

Heres the records just for anyone who wants to check up.
    Henry Armstrong, 151-21-9, 101 KO's. 1931-45. 15 years active
    Shugar Ray Leonard, 36-3-1, 25 KO's. 1977-97 12 years active

The main rankings i looked at were fighter of the century awards so it discludes any fighters from 1999 on wards.

Watch Duran-Leonard I, then add a higher pace, more pressure and you have the outcome. Leonard can win this, no doubt. He is bigger, faster, probably punches harder but the pressure and pace is tremendous. I don´t think Leonard could go this. I see Leonard beeing comfortably ahead up to the 6th, like 5-1 or 4-2, and then Armstrong taking over winning all rounds but 1-2 and perhaps even stopping an exhausted Leonard late.
So either Armstrong TKO14 Leonard or Armstrong UD15 Leonard (9-6 in rounds).

That is a big problem and it would depend on hoe he paced himself , i think its one of them situation where a boxer could win , should win but may not. I still give it 75-25 to Leonard.

I'll take a boxer over a buzzsaw any day. Ray Leonard won't stand toe to toe with Henry Armstrong.

Perhaps he needs one fight to adjust much like he did against Duran.

Leonard is by far the bigger man here though. Armstrong, dominant as he was as a welterweight, was more of a 135-140 lber. Prime for prime I'll take Leonard over Armstrong at 147 lbs.

Like he didn´t stand toe to toe against Duran? Oh, yes he would. Especially since he is the bigger man. And Leonard is no boxer.

So was Barney Ross, a greater fighter than Ray Leonard.

Ross was a 3-division champion himself, having won titles at 135, 140 and 147. He weighed in at 142 against Armstrong although he still outweighed Armstrong by nearly 10 pounds. Leonard is a natural 147 lber, much bigger in comparison to Ross and Armstrong.

Barney Ross being a greater fighter than Leonard is arguable but Leonard is the better welterweight for me. Ross would have probably been most suited to fighting at 140.

I'll take Ray Leonard by decision. Armstrong troubles alot of fighters who don't have a reverse gear...but Leonard does, and he is the bigger fighter. But Armstrong is a terror, and very rough.

This is one of those match-ups where the great from the past would obviously lose but its blasphemy to say so.

I haven't scoured the internet for hours on end looking up old obscure newpaper reports to quote from. But i have seen Ray Leonard fight on film. And i have seen Armstrong fight on film. Henry Armstrong was good for his time, but he'd get his **** pushed by Leonard.

I agree with the post overall but this example just shows that Armstrong could easily defeat a much bigger, great fighter. And Armstrong fitted better in the welterweight division later on than he did against Ross.

If this fight would happen tomorrow I would bet everything I have that Leonard would not take a step backward against a smaller fighter when he isn´t forced to.
    Leonard is no boxer. :bart

Barney Ross a better welterweight than Sugar Ray Leonard? Not a chance.

Brodhi you use the arguement that Armstrong beating ross proves he can beat a great fighter much bigger than he.

    1. Ross was past his prime when he fought armstrong

    2. Ross was a signifigantly smaller than Sugar Ray Leonard

I never stated he was better. You could bring arguments that he was greater though.

It´s bodhi, without the "r". :bart

Nobody thought so before the fight and he beat Garcia only a few month before.

True but that doesn´t prove me wrong.
