It was announced today that the Shumenov vs Wright fight will be for the WBA belt and the Kalenga vs Dorticos fight will be for the WBA Interim strap. Pretty stupid move from the WBA to upgrade Shumenov to a full champion, but at least the winner of Shumenov vs Wright will face the Lebedev Ramirez winner.
This whole super, unified, regular and interim belt thing is as ridiculous as it reads on paper, but letting others fight for a higher rated "vacant" strap even makes things worse. Shumenov vs Wright is by no means a "world title" level fight and even less as Kalenga vs Doritos, but he's right in this case because he already had the "interim" paper belt, and he should be upgraded if others are fighting for a vacant one. Of course this "regular" belt is nothing more as a minor strap, but the "interim" is even less valid. They've taken the place of what the intercontinental and the international belts once were, and those belts are even degraded to a lower level. There's only one real WBA champion and his name is Denis Lebedev
While I MOSTLY agree that there's one real WBA titlist, Ledbedev, I've got to say, in this particular case, this holds true, yet in the other divisions, like the HW division, the WBA is trying to maintain order of mandate, while allowing their top NON SUPER Champ, to help the unified titlist, FURY, and before him, Wlad, to make the best fights, by using the "regular" champion to aid in thinning out the lesser contenders managing to climb the ranks. I despised the whole interim and regular champ for a time, but I now see it as a necessary evil, keeping Wlad from having to fight Koyode at one point, or defending against Chagaev again, or Boswell. When this whole situation at CW is settled, we'll likely see Ledbedev vs Gassiev and Drozd vs the winner of Usyk v Glowacki winner, and eventually, a very likely full unification fight, which we all hope for. thumbsup
