I cant understand how a reasonably modern fighter such as Riddick Bowe can be bestowed with ATG status - Can you imagine any other HW in history throwing a belt into the garbage rather than put their lives on the line for it, plus it was just one of a number of concurrent belts whereas in the olden days there was 1 belt one champion no selection of belts where you could throw one away if you were afraid of your next opponent.
Would Frazier have thrown his belt away rather than fight Ali and just avoid him looking for an easy $$$ career - In fact now is the only time I can recall that its took 2 fighters to dominate the division, both not fighting their most serious rival ............In fact make that 3 if Haye is gonna carry on fighting borderline top 30 contender for his version of the title.
Who is the best HW right now?????? Who knows cos the top 3 wont fight each other........How can this equate to an improvement in ability??

The way to undo this argument is easy. Mike Tyson. He's basically a slightly heavier version of Jack Dempsey and was also a "shorter man" in the ring.

It's not really called nostalgia. It's called recognition.

I think you also fail to realize that the fitness regimen might have gotten better it doesn't mean these bigger stronger men are better boxers. Sprinting is done by yourself and the best way to achieve the best results comes from excellent training that wasn't available then. However, in the case of boxing there's a "science" being applied. Mental chess played out with physical tools. You can't win a fight with the best fitness regimen.

I dont know, guys like Marciano, basilio,La Motta all had some of the best stamina i have ever seen in the ring to name a few. They also used to go for 15 rounds if needed.

Even without all the new equipment and vitamin supplements, those fighters from the yesteryear did pretty good with what they had.

I'm Stone Age, BD, 'n aside from warm recollections of guys from the '40s 'n '50s, think I'm objective judging fighters.

Be interested if anyone can point to blind prejudice assessing the skills of Golden Age fighters vis-a-vis the current crop in any of my posts?

Those guys fought 15 round fights..and they trained better and ate better food.

There are no heavies that can last 15 rounds:hi:

Frazier was a LOT better than the guys that Starched Vlad.:deal

    Plus

    He beat Ali

That alone shits on your entire life.

Part of this is because at least here in the US, boxing is not as popular as it was in the 80s. There are only 25% of the number of boxing gyms compared to the 80s. That means, less particpants and less aspiring young boxers, meaning less talent pool. It's very apparent in all weight divisions, especially in the heavyweights. There is however a rise in popularity in other countries like in Europe. But as you all know, Americans will not pay any attention or will be quick to discredit anything "EURO".

Americans (some fools) will even tell you the best boxers are currently in the NFL or NBA, playing another pro sport.
