Am I the only one who saw this on saturday's night fight? cotto was pretty much out everything margo till he gased out and couldnt take anymore punishement from tony, Big win for Tony of course but MAN the guy should not be fighting at welter, what was his weight on fight night? I've been saying this since the Margo/ floyd talk have been in here, Margo is NOT a welter, he won cause he bullied a smaller man, same goes for guys like paul williams, its pretty lame, DLH ddoes this too, but hes not using his size to win, Margo on the other hand always get praise for being "strong" well of course he has to be strong cause hes fighting guys who look like midget compared to him... I am not a cotto fan as most of you know, but not a fan of Margarito either, I think it's a shame to watch something like this, I liked the fight but as a boxer I knew pretty well what Cotto was into to saturday night, a bigger man beating on a smaller one. Call me what u want I don't care I did see the size difference between the 2 and it pissed me off.
He can make the weight and as far as I'm aware doesn't have to dehydrate as much as you'd expect for a man of his size . He looked pretty fresh at the way in anyway . Cotto despite his struggle to make Light-Welterweight just isn't that big at Welterweight .
Like alot of people said before the fight, Margarito is tall, but not physically bigger than Cotto nescessarily. Cotto was able to beat virtually all of his opponents because he had a natural size and strength advantage and he could hammer them and batter them with pure force. Cotto had to fight a guy as big as him this time - and he barely got past another good sized Welter in Shane Mosley. Size was a big part of Cotto's winning ways. Cotto looked much bigger than I expected against Margarito, and he was clearly extremely powerful, as always.
well I will put it this way, I'm 165 pounds and train year long in boxing gyms and lift weights, I could cut down to 147 for a fight but a guy that is naturaly 147 doesnt have the same strenght, I'm not tall so I could pretty much cut down to it and stay at range but margo as a big frame hes not a natural 147 at all its easy to see, cotto couldnt get him off of him simply because of that, for a good example just look at Williams Margo, a man his size who too should be fighting at 154 or 160.
???? you're serious? cotto is naturaly gifted as for stenght, hes not strong cause hes bigger like margo was, its not the same thing at all my friend, cotto was no where as big as margo
No recent opponent except maybe Golden Johnson was severely outweighed by Margarito. Jesus dude. 5lbs maximum? Cotto usually enters at jr.middle limit. Margarito was probably middleweight limit. What's the big deal? He has a height and reach advantage but definately not a huge weight advantage. Thomas Hearns was a 6'1 welter with huge power. Are we going to say he should have been a middleweight too?
same day weigh ins for both fighters and i gaurentee you'd see margarito fighting at 160 and cotto fighting at 154 ...
well if you want my opinion yeah he shoulda been, but I'm not gonna get into that and disgrace a great fighter, I'm saying what I think is logical, boxing need to evolve, those weighting should come the same day as the fight, no fake weights... btw you and I both no there was a lot more then 5 lbs between the 2.
Ok, this is starting to feel like excuses. Everybody knew what they were getting into. They're professionals. Margarito just went in there throwing, he wasn't using his height, and both he and Cotto had the same reach according to HBO's 'Tale Of The Tape.' BTW, you know what I was sick of seeing? Lennox Lewis use his height and reach as an advantage to push off and extend his opponents to a comfortable range for him. Dead serious. Lewis fought extremely tall and cheated with his dimensions, constantly. I couldn't stand it.
Good post. But Paul williams is the WORST at abusing the scale system and the purpose of even having divisions!
I see your points, but everybody in here who know me know I'm not a fan of cotto or even margo, I just say what I think and you're right about lennox fighting tall, I think he cheated plenty too, but in a division wich isnt about weight, the lower divisions are there specialy for smaller mans who want to fight with guys their sizes.
Oh, cry me a river, brotha. Personally I think it's lame, too, but this fight doesn't stand out as something egregious. If the man can make weight, he can fight. Pure and simple. That's part of the game. Is it his height and reach that trouble you? I mean all things considered a guy like Ruiz should be crying foul when he's forced to fight a behemoth like Valuev for the title. More reach. More size. More weight. I mean he's indubitably the bigger man but neither Ruiz or the ESB community ***** about it. Cotto just got his ass shredded by a fierce 147 lb Mexican shredder that never jams up until it faces a Williams and that's that. No more, no less.
