This archive of the fightnews rankings aggregating the 'big four' is from almost exactly one decade ago. (I pulled it from the Wayback Machine, a snapshot taken in May of 2010...so a decade + a month)

    Here is today's.

This is quite an undertaking, probably best if made digestible by tackling each division separately. Then once finished comparing the belt holders (and implicitly therefore upper echelon, though I realize that no, they aren't reliably 100% synonymous) in each weight class, we can see which end of the decade outscores the other with more superior groupings.

Try and be objective - whether you're more of a 'yearn for the good ol' days' type or really into the current scene. If you're informed enough about both eras and the fighters named to evaluate their h2h worth, then do so, and be honest by shelving any regards to which era you're hoping is proven #1.

So, broken up into squadrons by individual body mass, we have:

    • Fury/Joshua vs. VitKlit/Haye/WladKlit

    • Makabu/Goulamirian/Shumenov/Egorov/Dorticós/Głowacki vs. Włodarczyk/Jones/Huck/Cunningham

    • Beterbiev/Bivol/Ramírez Sánchez vs. Pascal/Shumenov/Cloud/Brähmer

    • Benavidez/Smith/Álvarez/Chudinov/Plant vs. Froch/Ward/Sartison/Bute/Stieglitz

    • Charlo/Álvarez/Murata/Golovkin/Andrade vs. Martínez/Zbik/Sturm/Sylvester

    • Charlo/Rosario/Lara/Soro/Teixeira vs. Martínez/Foreman/Ishida/Spinks/Dzinziruk/Angulo

    • Spence/Pacquiao/Besputin/Ortiz/Crawford vs. Berto/Mosley/Senchenko/Zaveck/Pacquiao

    • Ramírez/Taylor/Barrios/Ulysse vs. Alexander/Khan/Maidana/Bradley

    • Lomachenko/Haney/Davis/Mendy/López vs. Soto/Márquez/Moses/Acosta/Funeka/Katsidis

    • Berchelt/Santa Cruz/Alvarado/Diaz/Herring vs. Tajbert/Uchiyama/Solis/Fana/Martínez

    • GRJ/LSC/Xu/Marrero/Warrington/Stevenson vs. Rojas/John/Gamboa/Cruz/López

    • Vargas/Akhmadaliev/Figueroa/Rios/Navarrete vs. Nishioka/Caballero/Udomna/Molitor/Vázquez

    • Oubaali/Inoue/Rigoneaux/Casimero vs. Montiel/Moreno/Pérez

    • Estrada/González/Aloyan/Ancajas/Ioka vs. Darchinyan/Nashiro/Donaire/Nongqayi/Arce

    • Martínez/Dalakian/Mthalane/Tanaka vs. Wonjongkam/Kameda/ Concepción/Mthalane/Narváez

    • Teraji/Kyōguchi/Canizales/Alvarado/Soto vs. Mayol/Segura/Reveco/Tamara/Calderón/Casimero

    • Moonsuree/Niyomtrong/Benavides/Taduran/Méndez vs. Jaigrajan/ González/Joyi/Nietes

...also, shout out to guys like Shumenov, PacMan, Mthalane, Chocolatito and Casimero - regardless of how small a slice of the pie they may have (or how legitimate you consider particular versions of world titles) or how much you like or dislike any of them...being any kind of world titlist, or even at the very top of the world rankings, a decade apart is no small feat. :deal:

I was going to make a poll but forgot the stupid options limit (ten per thread; so we can't all fit 17 divisions...so forget it).

    Here's my go at it...

    • Fury/Joshua vs. VitKlit/Haye/WladKlit
Toe-Boy isn't even relevant here, K2 alone >>>> today's enthroned heavies. I know WK lost to Fury and Joshua, but if you think he was anywhere close to his prime there's no point wasting any further breath arguing with you about it.

    • Makabu/Goulamirian/Shumenov/Egorov/Dorticós/Głowacki vs. Włodarczyk/Jones/Huck/Cunningham
Cruiser is hot right now - but not yet 2010 hot.

    • Beterbiev/Bivol/Ramírez Sánchez vs. Pascal/Shumenov/Cloud/Brähmer
Was a big fan of all the yesteryear belt holders at light heavy (yes even the disgraced Tavoris), but honestly this current team is a cut above them with a better single puncher than any of them in the Beast, a better pure boxer in Bivol, and then well-rounded GRS.

    • Benavidez/Smith/Álvarez/Chudinov/Plant vs. Froch/Ward/Sartison/Bute/Stieglitz
    Um,

No fucking contest. Take out Froch and Ward and this would only have swung today's way because of Canelo.

    • Charlo/Álvarez/Murata/Golovkin/Andrade vs. Martínez/Zbik/Sturm/Sylvester
Huge fanboy of Maravilla here, but not sure he can shoulder this whole load by himself. Too many German mediocrities weighing him down.

    • Charlo/Rosario/Lara/Soro/Teixeira vs. Martínez/Foreman/Ishida/Spinks/Dzinziruk/Angulo

Eh, tbh, 154 remains weak now as it was then. High-IQ slicksters Cory & Erislandy cancel one another out. So do all the remaining "blah" guys aside from those with the green belt. So if we're down to Charlo vs. Maravilla, yeah - the hell with "Lions Only". :nono:

    • Spence/Pacquiao/Besputin/Ortiz/Crawford vs. Berto/Mosley/Senchenko/Zaveck/Pacquiao
Wait...so, Pacquiao is on a team - against his other team?? Bear in mind, though, we're talking about quality here, and the difference between 2010 Pac and 2020 Pac. The latter obviously counts for about half of the former. Even so, his contemporaries overall might not make up the difference with Spence and Crawford both currently being top p4p guys.

    • Ramírez/Taylor/Barrios/Ulysse vs. Alexander/Khan/Maidana/Bradley

Hmm... Tough one, honestly. TTT is maybe the best fighter of the bunch - except he's sort of standing on his own here. Too much quality back then. JCR, Barrios and Ulysse are 'just okay'.

    • Lomachenko/Haney/Davis/Mendy/López vs. Soto/Márquez/Moses/Acosta/Funeka/Katsidis
Another where you have a single great having to put his team on his back (JMM). Those other guys are clearly inferior to all of today's lightweight champs. Lo siento, Dinamita - this isn't a reflection on you.

    • Berchelt/Santa Cruz/Alvarado/Diaz/Herring vs. Tajbert/Uchiyama/Solis/Fana/Martínez
Not a lot in this, but Uchi > the field and the rest cancel out.

    • Vargas/Akhmadaliev/Figueroa/Rios/Navarrete vs. Nishioka/Caballero/Udomna/Molitor/Vázquez

Same deal as with feather, but with Uchiyama's countryman Nishioka serving as standard-bearer and shining beacon here.

    • Oubaali/Inoue/Rigoneaux/Casimero vs. Montiel/Moreno/Pérez
Love me some Kochulito - and the other two ain't too shabby...but... this one's an easy pick.

    • Teraji/Kyōguchi/Canizales/Alvarado/Soto vs. Mayol/Segura/Reveco/Tamara/Calderón/Casimero
Iron Boy almost carries the day by his lonesome, but the pair of Japanese fighters are too much in sum.

    • Moonsuree/Niyomtrong/Benavides/Taduran/Méndez vs. Jaigrajang/González/Joyi/Nietes
As with light fly ^, you have a fantastic champion in Chocolatito, but too little support around him to not be overwhelmed by a deeper roster spearheaded by a pair of elite (but wildly stylistically different) Thais.

9 divisions stronger in 2010, and 8 stronger now IMO.

TTT is a beast, and from that selection he is undoubtedly facing 3 very good fighter on his ones, but why can't we give him the back up he deserves? Throw in Regis, and if someone is so inclined (I'm not) Mikey Garcia, and today's 140 kicks ass.

Josh Taylor; blitzes Khan. He chases Bradley down with superior footwork and out-works Timbo for a UD. Similar story with Alexander. Josh may not be a killer puncher, but I don't think he needs to be to stop a 140 Maidana. Marcos was a savage, but Josh is so precise and sharp with his short shots, I think he could dissect Marcos, and if not? he wins on points.

Regis Prograis; blitzes Khan. I love Rougarou (I might be the biggest fan on here) but I don't think he has the style to go after Bradley and Alexander. I'm not saying he can't, but he's clearly more comfortable when guys come to him IMO. Which makes him vs Maidana an easy pick IMO, Regis picks him apart in a war.

Mikey Garcia; blitzes Khan. Too Sharp for Timbo and Alexander 'The Great', his 1-2 would pick them off and his feet are overall too good. I think he gets a clean sweep here, as Maidana isn't gonna get the treat he got with Floyd, as Garcia won't be sat on the ropes for long. Although, Salido started to give Mikey issues so maybe Marcos does well late? I doubt it.

Don’t really find this that interesting to be honest. Take the heavyweights for example. I know you chose Wlad 2010 and say the version both Fury and AJ pick was not at his peak but the real truth is both AJ and Fury are much more exciting than Dr No. I know I am being unkind but he bored me to death so much so that I always joked that as a fitting punishment condemned prisoners should be forced to watch his fights. I think what might be more interesting is to pick who is the top dog in both years. By way of example 2010 Floyd is top with a belt or not.

Well, as I said, restricting ourselves to going by who possesses hardware (or is ranked #1 in cases where the championship in a given org in a given weight is vacant) is an imperfect system, as "those holding titles" and "the best" are not always perfectly synonymous...but it does give us a rough idea for comparison, and is a good place to start.

Obviously yes Rougarou would make a vastly preferable teammate over JCR/Ulysse/Barrios, yes.

By and large though I think we get a decent overview going by the alphabet soup.

This is a hard thread. We don't know how many of the fighters in 2020 will turn out! On face value I thin 2010 is a little better though I really don't follow jr flyweight, and straw weight all that much unless there is a pound for pound talent is around.

I'd give the higher weight classes more worth. It doesn't really matter who the best 108 pound adult male boxers are. At least not the same extent as 147 plus. Usyk and Gassiev were also left off the list (I get it they aren't champs), but just because you hold an alphabet title does not mean you represent the top of the division.

I agree with your other picks. But not this one.

It's not like they beat Wlad this year. Fury beat him in 2015.

If there was a difference between the Wlad Klitschko who fought Eddie Chambers in 2010 and the Wlad who fought Bryant Jennings in 2015, it wasn't that noticeable.
