Seems like fighting for the Heavyweight Title at the Garden in the old days was a big deal. It's said only a selection of boxers get to go that far. Quarry and Shavers did it among others. Who else significant can you think of?

Good one! Missed that. Might have been the highlight of Buster's career.

Buster didn't do too bad in that fight really did he, but wouldn't have mattered how he played it, Smoke was always going to get him eventually.

Also: Jameel McCline fought there but not in a main event.

Actually, McCline fought Samuel Peter for the vacant WBC interim title at MSG. It's the one fight card I've been to at Madison Square Garden.

The Frazier-Mathis & Benvenuti-Griffith card was the inaugural card at the current MSG.

Let's see... from memory, those not mentioned yet (current location) -
    Lewis-Holyfield I
    Holmes-Weaver
    Frazier-Ramos
    Frazier-Ellis
    Bowe-Dokes
    Ruiz-Joshua I
    W Klitschko-Brock
    W Klitschko-Ibragimov
    V Klitschko-Johnson

Y'know... going through reigns in my mind, I'm surprised at how few heavyweight title bouts were fought there. Lots of significant non-title bouts happened, as did title bouts in other divisions. Duran won two of his titles there.

And if we go back to previous locations, there's a rich history of heavyweight title bouts at the Garden.

Nice! Thanks for your input! Considering that MSG is the Mecca & that the current location hasn’t had many HW title fights, do you believe fighting in the main event for a HW title is extra special for a fighter, win or lose?
