LF) You turned pro in 2004 and the following year faced the 6-0 Andre Ward over six rounds. Tell me about that fight?

DB) I fought him on a weeks notice. I felt I hurt him badly in the fight, when I floored him in the fourth they gave a late count. At the end I thought I had won but I feel they didnt judge the fight correctly. A lot of his punches caught my arms and gloves.

Note: one judge had it to Ward by just a single point.

LF) Ward was shaken and dropped a few times early in his career do you think his chin improved with stepping up to 168 or is he just too defencively adept at avoiding punches now?

DB) I honestly feel that nobody has really hit him flush since I did. We still dont really know now whether his chin is suspect or not.

LF) Was there ever any talk of a rematch?

DB) Yes they called me a couple of times but it was never made. Id fight him again right now.

LF) You are the only fighter to have beaten WBC champion Adonis Stevenson. You flattened him early in the second with a big right. Were you surprised when you knocked him out?

DB) Well Id wobbled him at the end of the first with an uppercut. In the second I threw a double jab and right and down he went. At the time I didnt even know the right had caught him like that (to knock him out).

LF) How much had he improved in the rematch you had earlier this year?

DB) It was the same as the Kovalev rematch, I dont know where their power came from in the second fights.

LF) You just mentioned Kovalev, you fought to a close split loss a few months after your win over Stevenson. Was that decision fair?

DB) After that fight I was 100% certain I had beaten him. I completely man-handled him and dropped him three times though only one was counted. If you had been there you would have said Id won.

LF) Two years later he stopped you in the return. What happened?

DB) I just dont know where he got that power from its like he was on something. In the rematch he had ten-times more power. I mean, with him and Adonis Stevenson I dont understand how I can man-handle them both and then have that happen in the rematch when Ive done exactly the same things?

LF) Who would win between the pair in your opinion?

DB) Id go with Kovalev. Even when I got the better of the first fight he was still strong. With Stevenson he just tries to set up his left hand but Kovalev has power in both hands and a little more boxing about his work.

Sillakh won the first round and was making Kovalev miss. Too bad that his chin might actually be worse than Khan's. atsch

If anybody noticed, Sillakh got hit in a spot on the side of the head that is nearly impossible to recover from. He wasn't hit on the chin or in the face. I think it's the same spot Stevenson got Dawson in

I wanted to watch Sillakh's last fight before I commented on some things and I finally got around to watching it. Against Grachev, Silk fought very loosey-goosey--which served him for the most part but ultimately was the cause of his demise. He kind of had a half-hearted jab in that fight, and didn't throw it with much conviction. He also held his hands way too low throughout the duration of that fight and that's what got him TKO'd. Grachev basically timed him when he had his hands down--which he had been trying to do the whole fight.

Silkah fights very tall. And he did so against Grachev. Problem with that is, in that fight, he would back straight up with his hands down and you simply do not do that when you're as tall as he is. As well as he moved in that fight, he still fought kind of careless. Maybe he took it for granted, who knows.

In his last fight, he punched with much more conviction, so I have no idea what Astor is talking about when he says Silk has lost his aggressiveness. That simply is not true. He was not really on his toes against Piternov and he threw the jab and all of his punches with much more conviction. I'm not sure which style would suit him best against Kovalev, but there are some things that Silk cannot do against Kovalev if he wants to win.

He can't sit in front of him and just throw the jab and not expect a counter off a single jab. If Silk is going to throw a single jab, then he needs to make sure he's slipping to his left when he throws it every time. He can stay in front of Kovalev if he throws a 1-2 and comes forward to either tie up or slip out towards his left. But standing in front of Kovalev with how tall Silk likes to fight and with how low he keeps each hand is a recipe for disaster. Kovalev likes to throw that right hand and he's good at throwing it from different angles.

But I really don't think boxing on his toes or standing more flat footed will matter. It's going to be some other things that Silk will have to do to win this fight. Getting Kovalev's respect early with a stiff jab is key. And I think he needs to be first. If Kov is allowed to be as aggressive as he likes to be, it could be a short night for Silky. Silk is extremely talented, but he does have some bad habits that Kovalev can capitalize on. It's the best fight that 175 has to offer as far as I'm concerned.

Yep, he surprised me too...

I expected him to last a little longer as this and would give Kovalev some problems for a couple of rounds before getting KTFO :yep
