    Hi,
I've heard that to increase punching power you should use the heavy bag. My question may sound silly, but would this mean that the heavier the bag the better increase in power?
I am looking at buying a bag and was wondering on the benefits/disadvantages of different weights. any recommendations?

Some people say no but I say yes. More resistance needs more power output to move it. In other words the heavier the object the harder you have to hit it to make it move.

Yes, unless you just tap it as hard as the lighter bag. The harder you hit, the more a heavy bag will resist. The more resistance, the more strength gains. There's an optimum point though, you won't keep gaining strength. It's all a trade off between strength, speed, endurance, etc.

Theres better ways of doing it, people on a Heavybag usually push with there shots, to move it. Rather than snapping it out. Theres a way where a 40lb bag can give the ressistance of a 150lb bag.

  5. Smaller bags that move around can give you something to think about when throwing punches. For some reason i like bags that are up a little higher aswell, where you have better access to the bottom half.

I agree with scrap. You shouldn't be trying to move the heavybag. You should be trying to hit it hard WITHOUT it moving, snapping your punches and not pushing them.

You shouldn't push it, agreed. But even a snappy punch will exert force on on side of the bag, making it want to move. If the bag is too light it will not offer the right resistance. A 40 lb bag is **** :)

If the bag is heavy and hard enough pushing it will break your hands or wrists :D

Thanks all, lotsa help. Would you recommend buying the heaviset I can find, eg 100-150 lbs?
I don't know if it makes a difference but I weigh about 100kgs.

My pref. A bit of movement isn't bad, keeps your head and feet moving.

Yes and get an ankle strap, 2 Karabeners either end and a swivvell attached to the link. stick a Jab out and it wants to be 4" short of the Bag. Now the bag is Heavier than you, and boy does improve footwork, and awareness of distance :good. Plus you have to work :yep
