Sillyman "beating a lady is not a major sin or crime"

World Boxing Council president Don Jose Sulaiman believes that the WBC should not strip Floyd Mayweather Jr. of his welterweight title because of his being sentenced to 90 days in prison.

Sulaiman told ***********.com/Manila Standard that while the “WBC officially has not decided anything yet” - he also noted that “beating a lady is highly critical, [but] it is not a major sin or crime.”

The WBC president feels that “we should join the service to society ruling [by the court] with visits to hospitals of children with cancer.”

Sulaiman said he believes the WBC “should not touch his (Mayweather’s) career or his title because we want him to fight (Manny) Pacquiao which is the fight that the world wants and perhaps the last boxing match of both.”

The undefeated Mayweather was sentenced last week to 90 days in prison at the Clark County Detention Center in Las Vegas on a domestic violence charge involving his former girlfriend Josie Harris, the mother of his children, who Mayweather was also accused of threatening.

Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa ordered Mayweather to report to jail on January 6 after the 34-year-old boxer had earlier pleaded to one count of battery domestic violence and no contest on two counts of harassment.

Earlier, WBC executive secretary Mauricio Sulaiman, the son of Jose, admits that under the WBC regulations a champion or highly-ranked fighter - who serves a prison term for a crime - is supposed to be stripped of his title and/or removed from the rankings - but Mauricio said the WBC would stand by Mayweather.

Sulaiman was quoted by ***********.com as saying “The WBC has always been in the corner of the boxer and the organization was created to protect fighters. Floyd is in voluntary defense stage and although there is no request or his promoter for a fight in May (as earlier announced) we will discuss his legal situation and try to achieve the most fair outcome for the fighter and the fans.”

RingTV.com has learned that RING middleweight champion Sergio Martinez will hold press conference in his native Argentina on Thursday, where he is expected to publicly denounce comments attributed to WBC president WBC Jose Sulaiman that Martinez believes are insensitive to women in general, and, domestic violence, in particular.

Ranked No. 3 by THE RING, pound-for-pound, the 36-year-old Martinez (48-2-2, 27 knockouts) is also expected to express his disappointment in what he feels is the organization's failure to follow through with last week's mandate that RING No. 5-rated middleweight and WBC beltholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (44-0-1, 31 KOs) face Martinez in his next bout.

Top Rank Inc., the promoter of the 25-year-old Chavez, announced on Wednesday that Chavez will defend his belt against Marco Antonio Rubio (52-5-1, 45 KOs) on HBO on Feb. 4 at Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

"Sergio Maravilla Martinez is his own man. He makes his own decisions and he's very, very upset. But whatever he will say tomorrow, or whatever he tweets today, it's because of his own decisions, and he will follow up with his destiny," said Lewkowicz.

"But he will march on this destiny. He will not allow anyone to dictate his destiny, and in this case, that's the WBC. I believe that the networks and the sanctioning bodies never have had a real human being like Sergio Martinez. They don't understand him. I don't believe that tomorrow, he will be a happy camper."

As a supporter of battered women's issues, Martinez often visits women’s shelters and domestic violence centers, meeting and supporting the victims there.

According to his advisor, Sampson Lewkowicz, Martinez is "very disappointment" in the words attributed to the 80-year-old Sulaiman, who was quoted by writer Ronnie Nathanielsz of The Manila Standard as appearing to dismiss the physical abuse of women by their male counterparts in general, and, the case of RING No. 1-pound-for-pound fighter, Floyd Mayweather Jr., in particular.

As a result of last Wednesday's guilty plea to a charge of misdemeanor battery domestic violence and no contest on two counts of harassment, Mayweather was sentenced by Las Vegas Justice of the Peace Melissa Saragosa to 90 days in jail starting on January 6. She also ordered him to pay a $2,500 fine, to complete 100 hours of community service and to undergo 12 months of treatment in a domestic violence program.

The sentence stems from an argument involving Mayweather's ex-girlfriend and two of their children last September.

"The WBC officially has not decided anything yet," said Sulaiman, in defense of his organization's decision not to strip Mayweather Jr. of his belt. "Beating a lady is highly critical, [but] it is not a major sin or crime."

Lewkowicz said Martinez was angered by the comments.

"Definitely, Sergio is outraged at the comments of Jose Sulaiman. Sergio plans to say some things tomorrow, and, that is, that definitely, he's very, very disappointed with the WBC. I've gone to several events with Sergio, who has gone to several charity events, and he has refused to get paid for that," said Lewkowicz.

"Sergio never has asked for a dime because he does these things from his heart. Sergio only wants to send a message, and he doesn't want to get paid or recognized like other champions or like any other figures in sports. He doesn't want to get paid to have a dinner with people or to sign autographs. This kid's feelings, they are for real."

Martinez is also expected to address the situation with Chavez, who will face Rubio on a card that will also feature RING No. 4-rated pound-for-pound Nonito Donaire (27-1, 18 KOs) in his junior featherweight debut against THE RING's No. 8-rated 122 pounder Wilfredo Vazquez Jr. (21-1-1, 17 KOs).

Donaire-Vazquez is for the WBO's junior featherweight belt that is being vacated by Jorge Arce, who dethroned Vazquez by 12th-round knockout on the undercard of Manny Pacquiao's unanimous decision over Shane Mosley in May.

Martinez had earned the undisputed middleweight belt with a unanimous decision over Kelly Pavlik in April of last year. He followed that up with a second-round knockout of Paul Williams in November, a rematch of their 2009 fight that Williams won by a controversial majority decision.

Martinez was forced to give up his WBC belt for fighting Sergei Dzinziruk in March on HBO, a fight Martinez won by an eight-round KO. The WBC then elevated Sebastian Zbik to the status of full champion and mandated that Zbik face Chavez, who dethroned him by a unanimous decision in June.

Martinez is coming off an 11th-round knockout of Darren Barker in October, and Chavez, off last month's fifth-round stoppage of Peter Manfredo Jr.

Lewkowicz always contended that Martinez would face Rubio for the vacant WBC belt due to his belief that Chavez will be stripped for refusing to fight Martinez.

In the absence of a bout against Chavez, however, Martinez will face RING No 3-rated middleweight Matthew Macklin (28-3, 19 KOs) on March 17 at New York's Madison Square Garden.

"Sergio Martinez will not say tomorrow that he will never fight again for the WBC, because his only goal was to be the middleweight champion for the WBC, and to honor his idol, who was Carlos Monzon. But he wants to get that title back, and he knows that the only way to get that title back is to force the public to demand that Chavez either fight or give up the title," said Lewkowicz.

"So, Sergio Martinez still is loyal to the WBC, because he wants that to be his history. But tomorrow, he will say that he is not fighting for the WBC, but that he is fighting for THE RING Magazine title, which is the most logical."
