"after a news conference Wednesday that he is seriously considering a drop to 170 pounds for two fights.

One he’d take to see if he could successfully make the welterweight limit, and a second would potentially be for a Superfight with champion Georges St. Pierre."

    And...

"He also acknowledged an interest in fighting at heavyweight. He’s got the kind of frame to add on the weight and could compete around 225 pounds.

Whether that would be enough to allow him to deal with the behemoths at the top of the division – such as champion Brock Lesnar and No. 1 contender Shane Carwin – is another matter entirely. But one of the things that makes Silva so great is that he thinks big."

"It would be an enormous boost for the sport if he could make a run at four UFC belts, much like golf benefited in 2000 from Tiger Woods’ run at the grand slam."

at 170 he wont be the favorite vs GSP.
At a catchweight or 185, he would be the favorite, but not on GSP territory.

It's hard to say, he used to fight at 170, but now that might be too much of a weight drain to be effective at that weight.

i dont think he can cut to 170 anymore, i think he just really wants GSP and knows thats the only way to get to him

I dont know what to make of this. Silva said he only had a few more fights left in him. Now he's talking about making 170 and then piling on 55lbs?!?!?!

He already look drained at 185 imagine how would he would look at 170. Maybe a catchweight of 180 but no lower than that. As far as going up in weight, i think he'll be fine but i think he would be too small even at 225 against carwin or lesnar.

I rather watch him fight the top 205 fighters like rampage-shogun-thiago silva. Those fight would be much better and competitive than going up against lesnar and carwin.

Penn moved up to challenge himself, Silva is willing to MOVE DOWN and up to challenge himself, but GSP is staying put

Why should he move? What's up with this in MMA that when a guy is dominating everyone in his division, he need to go up?
Marvin Hagler never moved up in his prime and is still regard as one of the greatest boxer of all-time.

    GSP doesnt need Silva.
GSP said it he feels he isnt enough big enough for himself to feel good about a MW run. He is only 28 and is already a LEGEND. Why should he go right now at MW and have ''poor'' run at WW like Penn did with his 1-3 record there? (soon to be 1-4 if he rematch again GSP).
I would like to see Silva-GSP at MW , yes, but if GSP want to keep fighting at 170, his natural and best weight for the moment, let's him cement his legacy there.

might be a little overconfident. At his age, he really should be fighting where he belongs, at light heavy..

Fighting someone with a dominant wrestling game, weak from weight drain wont help him.

Going way up to fight big heavies will be nice..

To challenge himself like the other 2 champions are doing (silva-Penn) both are dominating their weight class so they moved up for a better challenge. Penn might be moving up again after the frankie edgar fight. Baby Jay doesn't have to fight gsp right away at 170, he could fight koscheck or fitch etc and then get another shot at gsp.

The point is both look for a better challenge to test themselves. GSP should do the same:bbbThis happens a lot in boxing, you see guys like pacquiao-mayweather-marquez-mosley-delahoya etc moved up for a better challenge. We all know GSP is a phenomenal athlete so why not challenge himself against the big boys at 185. He can always come down to 170 if he can't handle 185.

At 170 GSP will get him pregnant.
At HW Brock would powerbomb his scrawny ass.

Silvas very erratic, hes smoking something.

I don't believe Silva could make 170, not at all.

I don't believe Silva could compete with guys like Lesnar and Carwin.

I'd love to see him fight Shogun at 205 though.

You guys seem WAY WAY too sure that GSP wins at 170. Even at 170 I would have Silva as the favorite.

Would be f'kin awesome if he tried this.

He has one of those weird physiques that can fight in multiple weightclasses. I mean, he looked the same size as Griffin who is the biggest guy at 205, but I could imagine him shredded at 190 and then cutting 20lbs. And he was doing it a few years ago after all..
